When questioned on why they haven't raised the tax threshold (personal allowance) well we raised the pension didn't we...yes so that most pensioners who have an additional works/occupational pension (even if it's only a small amount) pay tax...

I just heard about this, the election, on Sunday evening and over here, the 'big' concern is the Mandatory Service for 18 year olds Aside from that, what are the biggies ? Cheers, Jack

At first glance the idea of getting young people involved in something beneficial to society seems reasonable. A second look reveals that it is nothing more than an appeal to some voters who might think it a way of getting “undesirables” off the streets. A year isn’t long enough to turn a school leave into someone able to make a contribution to one of the armed services. The alternative of one weekend a month is ridiculous, from experience, someone who volunteers one weekend a month needs supervision for a long time, unless they are committed to the endeavour. I don’t see how a person forced into something is going to be deeply committed.
National Service, if it is to benefit anyone, needs a purpose, I don’t see one. It also needs considerable planning and preparation, which costs money, and an end goal. After this proposed year serving the country what next?

There's a meme going around of Michelle Mone setting up a uniform supply company. Whilst obviously humour it does point to one potential benefit for rich Tories...

Paid for by not chasing tax dodgers/avoiders/Tory friends/donors and using cancelled HS2 and levelling up money...probably in the "Red Wall"

the 'big' concern is the Mandatory Service for 18 year olds Aside from that, what are the biggies ?
The current government has plenty of them, Jack. For instance, the fact that they have shelled out £240m (and counting) to send one - that's right, ONE - asylum seeker to Rwanda. Fantastic value-for-money, ain't it?
I can't help thinking that it would have been far better to have kept the poor bloke here - and retained the 240m. (On second thoughts, it's entirely possible that he might have been really pi$$ed off at being kept in this sad joint.)

Yowza .. that's a crazy amount of dosh ...... Geez, I'm angry and it's not even my money . Also, does he, Sunak, have to call an election or does he just think he's doing well enough in the polls that he can get away with it? Cheers, Jack

Cheers, Jack He's so far behind it's a possibility the Tories could end up losing up to 200 seats. But we know opinion polls are always inaccurate, but by how much is the big question.

He had already had his asylum request turned down, so could legally be deported, was paid £3000 to go and was happy to go, so he wasn't actually an "illegal" immigrant.
On top of that, about half of the the houses built in Rwanda and paid for by the UK government have been sold off by the Rwandans for private use [allegedly].

You mean - the Tories are dealing with a bigger bunch of rogues than themselves?

Sounds like an election we had in BC around 10-12 (-/+) years ago when the Liberals (MOR party) were so far ahead in the poles, they just quit campaigning and the other party NDP (Left socialist) were in 2nd place by a long ways but they came back
