Like you, I only ever tried to enter once. I had my young grandson with me and got thrown out almost before I'd got the door open!
Years later while away from home, SWMBO nagged and nagged me to place a bet on the Grand National. I wouldn't.
You can write the rest. Of course, it won, and I was made to pay up!!

I have only been in a bookies once and that was around 1986 to place a bet on the National. I walked in, didn't have a clue what to do, couldn't see through the smoke, felt quite intimidated and turned around and walked out. I have never attempted to place a bet since!
My experience in this regard is similar to yours, Nige - except that I didn't even get beyond looking through the door. The scene inside was enough to make me turn on my heel.

I have about £6 worth of Premium Bonds bought for me as a little kid. If only they had put the money in stocks and shares instead...

Yes. You probably would have had £7 by now - while some invisible parasite in the city would have managed to syphon off the rest of your gains.

I previously commented that the Scottish Tories' TV party political broadcast seemed to have been made for a Holyrood election rather than a Westminster one. The Beeb is expressing surprise at the same scottish tories' manifesto as it mainly addresses matters within the authority of Holyrood. I do not recall Sunak's manifesto pledging to abolish devolution.

I got a wodge of electioneering pamphlets today but it struck me that I still don't have my postal voting card. I referred back to a previously received letter which said they would be sent out on the 19th and if I hadn't received it by the 24th to ring a local number. I did and got a very disinterested male saying a lot are in the same boat. Not much help and no apology. Just You'll probably get it tomorrow - there's been a small delay. Well, up yours electoral commission! Conspiracy theories will abound. When we got one we each ticked the "until otherwise advised" (or whatever the wording) is but have not even been advised we will get one sometime. At least we can go during the day before it gets heaving in the evening.

Conspiracy theories will abound.
I've long thought that the Tories might cancel elections, on the grounds of expense. I recall reading (about 30 years ago) that the cost of an election was around £40million. I guess that this would be now be perhaps two or three times that amount.
I can imagine a Tory spokesperson announcing: "The country really can't afford the cost of an election, right now..... so we're cancelling all elections until further notice. We promise we'll bring them back at a future date, when the country can afford it. Honest." [Hidden from view, spokesperson uncrosses fingers.]

Twas why the five year rule is supposedly being rigidly enforced as per Bojo...(yes it's true) However that nice Mr Sunak has made a Horlicks (other bedtime drinks and manifestos are available) of that!

So many of our conventions appear to be based on trust not law. From the cradle to the grave... not; human rights - even the right to refer matters to a higher court. It was taken for granted in the past, but now? I don't trust our Government to honour anything.

We have still received nothing in the post from any party, which really has surprised me. As I have said before, I live in Tatton. It has always (apart from a blip when Martin Bell took the seat) been a Tory stronghold, Ester McWitchface is our current MP. It is about 50/50 between labour and conservative this time. It would be a massive win for labour, so why aren't they doing their damndest to promote themselves? I only know who my candidates are (for any party) by googling them. Likewise, why aren't the tories doing their best to defend themselves here?
Not that I want a pile of crap in the mail of course. I am not in an ideal place for door knockers so certainly not expecting those. Perhaps, in another part of the constituency they are working hard, and make the assumption that in these parts, conservatives are very much safe. I don't know anybody (from here) that will vote for them though.

I continue to be bombarded with LibDem stuff and have still had only one thing from the Tories. Nothing from other parties.
Maybe I saw the answer on the 'Peston' programme last night. Apparently the donations to Libdem are equal to Tory donations and both are MILES behind Labour. Maybe it's all down to money and perceived target constituencies.

We get stuff through the letterbox from all three main parties, but we don't get anyone coming round - not surprising really, it's not the nicest area in the world.

Only stuff we’ve had is from Labour, although there 7 other candidates. It’s a different constituency due to boundary changes which seems to have replaced strong Tory areas with more Labour inclined parts.
