Dunedin was founded by the Lay Association of the Free Church of Scotland, in 1848. The original intention was to set up a godly Scottish settlement, regulated by the kirk; the founders were unable to recruit enough Scots, and a good proportion of the early settlers were English, including most of the better off. In the early 1860s, gold was discovered in the Otago hinterland, and this led to a rush of miners, mainly from Australia. The miners included many Irish Catholics, which pleased the Presbyterians not at all!
The inflow of money and businesses with the gold rush led to Dunedin becoming the richest and fastest growing town in New Zealand, for a period in the late 19th century. By 1914, though, most of the growth was in the North Island, and the opening of the Panama Canal that year dented Dunedin's prospects...before then, ships passing Cape Horn made Dunedin their first port of call in New Zealand. The Canal shifted this traffic to the north.

The next door village is spelt Puncknowle. Want to guess how it's pronounced? Apply the rule of dropping sundry letters / vowels.
