My in-breds laws live in and around Stourton Caundle in Dorset, or Stawn as they would call it.

Anyone want to try Welsh names? S Two years ago I met my weird internet friends from another forum for a weekend away in Mawddach, Dollgellau. I now know how to say those. However this year we're off to Anglesey and the place is called Rhosneigr. It's probably pronounced Fishing Village. Milngavie is quite a famously awful gap between what you think the letters should sound like and the way it's said, but we also have Strathaven (Strayven) and Scone (Scooon). Just over the water from me and along a bit is Wemyss (Weeeems) Bay. Kirkcudbright is properly kir-coo-bree. There's also a place up by Aberdeen called Finzean which is pronounced Fingin'.

Not so much pronunciation, but meaning - Maori place names. Urewera, Urenui, Tutai Kuri....these are all in common use. Urewera - burnt penis; Urenui - large penis; Tutai Kuri - dog shit.

I hope you never take a job with your local Tourist Information Centre, John. The names come from poetic descriptions, or legends about gods and ancestors.
