Picking up from the Tonbridge/Tunbridge debate I love the randomness of place name pronunciation. Southwick in Hampshire is pronounced suth-ick, but Southwick in Wiltshire is pronounced south-wick. Mildenhall in Suffolk is pronounced mil-den-hall. Anyone wish to guess how Mildenhall in Wiltshire is pronounced?

Mall? I'm thinking the inverse of the East Anglian tendency to swallow vowels, which is pretty much your first example. I grew up near Ketton, spelt Kedington...

Incidentally, the first edition OS msps are a good guide to older local pronunciation eg Sewers End in Essex was bowdlerized to Sewards End. I used to live in Wolvercote, 1st Ed OS Woolvercot.

I used to live in nearby village called Cardross. Other placenames in our bit of Scotland might include Ardrossan where the emphasis is on the DROSS bit. Outsiders regularly fall into the trap of assuming the village is called Cardross. In fact I was once called a f***in sassenach by a native Scot (but evidently not native to this bit) for not saying it that way. Locals know it is pronouned Cardriss. That said, Scotrail gets it wrong too.

A couple from Leicestershire - Hoton near Loughborough - pronounced Ho-tun, not Hot-on - Ashby-de-la-Zouch - pronounced Ashby-de-la-Zotch, no Zoo-ch
And you've for Alnwick and Beswick which always get pronounced wrong

Then of course there's Woolfardisworthy in Devon - except the locals call it Woolsery... Round my way there's Bosham and Cosham. Years ago these were pronounced Bos'm and Cos'm but these days only Bos'm remains true to its local roots and Cosham is largely pronounced as it's spelt.
