Including the camera and new lenses ? Selling a 645 camera due to film options might mean getting a digital alternative to replace it with for the same type of images ( APS-C or 35mm full frame doesn't necessarily do that ). How much is a current medium format digital camera ? Divide that by the shots you take and print . Not pennies anymore .
That's right. The amount that I have spent on digital photography has vastly exceeded the amount that I've spent on film photography..... and that's despite the fact that I've been using film for around twice as long as I've been using digital.
But cost per shot it probably still wins. With my new digital I've set it up to be as similar to my film setup as I can. It helps that it's almost to the gram the same weight as the Pentax K2, so feels similar in use. Screen is reversed and only used for low angle/selfie stuff, no review by default, just shoot and move on. Have the 5:4 frame marker permanently on as that's my default aspect ratio for finished images. For now still using the evaluative metering to see if I can get my head around it, but have traditionally switched my digital to centre-weighted as I find it easier to assess manual exposure. But despite all that, a walk of just over an hour and a quarter yesterday resulted in 65 shots taken. Hit rate comparable to film but I don't need to pay someone to develop C41 and then do hours of scanning. So whilst it was way more expensive than shooting film, it's still cheaper. And it also means I can continue to use my film on the 'special' occasions as I'm not burning through it. Next step will be getting a setup for digitising film with it, I am seeing less and less point/advantage in flatbed scanning.

And how much per shot is digital? If you print a picture it costs pennies Impossible to say because, unless you print everything, you pay something, however little, every time you look at an image.

Exciting development - as of this afternoon there's a Pentax film project Instagram profile, so there must be a product coming soon.

Ok, they have confirmed it will be a zone focus half frame compact! Auto-exposure, manual winding. At this point the only thing I'm worried about is the price, it mustn't be too pricey.

It is mentioned in the latest AP, which unusually arrived promptly on a Saturday, and appears to be aimed at smartphone owners who want to try real photography using film (wait until they find out the cost of this), because Pentax believe that the portrait format of the half frame images is one of its attractions. I have owned and used Pentax kit since 1980, and suspect that this may be another doomed attempt to be different and trendy.

This is a camera brand that has totally lost the plot imho.

I think - and hope - you're both wrong. There's definitely a market for it, and their monochrome DSLR proved that they can sell out if they manage production numbers to ensure a profit. I'm quietly confident it'll be a success. Also, from the outset they said compact first, then see how it goes, with a view to making a new SLR. So if you want to see that, get behind it!

Friends of my youngest offspring love 1/2 frame and the upright format, one of them was using a Canon Demi at the BBQ we had last summer. As for costs, it does not seem to bother some of them they were quite happy consuming the more Hipster orientated thirty quid a roll C41 / ECN 2 films. Interesting conversations were had that evening around my improvised tumble dryer drum patio heater, these are the folk who are also into the early Sony digital point and shoot cameras. These are the people who will keep cameras in use long after most of the users here are long gone.

A 'leaked' photo is doing the rounds this weekend. Doesn't look like an AI/fake rendering.
Also the social channels are increasing frequency of posting, suggesting it's not far off announcement now.
For what it's worth, I was told by an industry insider a few weeks ago that their bosses had seen a prototype and there was an expectation that it wouldn't be cheap. A lot of the internet chat is centered on price, it seems. Only time will tell.

I think the rumoured new Rollei 35, full frame, AF and manual wind, sounds interesting.
