I've been on a photo meet and walk in Salisbury quite a while ago but have been put off returning by the Novichok (sp?) issue, then covid. I presume that it's asfe now... my main problem is contending with South Western Railway and cancellations/strikes/need to change x times when travelling from FNB

Salisbury was never really a great worry for Novichok - unlike bloody Amesbury, where it was literally just lying around...

Castle Cameras has a D800 with just 1000 shutter actuations at their Salisbury branch. It had 1054 shutter actuations when it arrived at my place Had a few more now as I've just been out to test it! Thanks for the post about them, the camera is practically unused - body is spotless. I'd love to know why somebody buys a camera like this and hardly uses it - male jewellery, or perhaps unexpected early demise. Whatever the reason, you've done well and will probably add another thousand shutter actuations quite soon.

If cameras are anything like bikes plenty folk buy them intending to use them then sit on the couch drinking beer (or if being polite life gets in the way).

Man buys camera. Celebrates by getting frisky with the missus. After a couple of months, said missus announces the impending patter of (another set of?) tiny feet. Camera has to be sold to pay for baby-related items.

Only problem with that theory is that the camera was released in 2013 and this body had only shot 1054 times. So the baby would now be ten and the camera has been hidden away for all those years

Most probably. I wouldn't have a clue about my shutter counts. I've now (somehow) got 5 digital cameras on the go. In a very active year I might keep 2000-2500 images and discard a few more -say max 3000 taken but I don't use the cameras evenly. My "proper" birding kit hasn't been out since Covid (not going near hides) and I more recently used an X-H1, bought s/h on a whim, then traded for an X-H2S. I bought an X-E2 in 2014 and hardly used it, because I didn't like it, but I've used it a lot this year, having become more familiar with the mirrorless experience.

If you want to know the shutter count, go to this website and upload a photo: www.camerashuttercount.com/I just took a photo of a blank wall, just so that the image was of no use to anyone.

What a palava! If you have a Mac just open the most recent image file in Preview and click "Inspector". Not all camera file formats show the shutter count in the EXIF, with some of them on the PC you just right-click on them and selected 'Properties' and it will display the shutter count. But, I don't have (nor want) a Mac so if I have a need to check the shutter count (a very rare thing for me to require) then I just drop a file on a website and voila... I have the info I want. Sounds like more of a palava going out to buy a Mac for one specific task that I rarely require

Phil Harvey's exiftool is a useful application. It is available at exiftool.org . It is available for Windows, Mac or primarily Linux. There are two versions for windows. One is a compiled file that just runs without needing a formal installation. The other is a pearl source file and you need pearl on your system to run it. If you have never seen the full metadata that gets carried with an image then it is an eye-opener.

The other is a pearl source file and you need pearl on your system to run it. Do you mean Perl? He means Perl. Wonderful language. I decided this year that I had better better understand Python, and one of the pluses was claimed to be "easier to learn than Perl" which made me smile. Perl has been my coding language of choice for 20 years or so. I can see why people like Python, it is very high level, but I can't imagine it as a starting language, at least not for anyone who might need C in the future.
