Managed to source a second hand D800 (with a limited guarantee) that will keep me in going for now. Going to do more research on different kit and make a decision about next steps. Thanks for all the advice/comments

Thanks for all the advice/comments That's good. Enjoy the research. I've found DSLR to mirrorless a bigger jump than I expected. Whether this was compounded by changing brands at the same time I won't know until such time as I try a Canon R camera but that won't be for a while yet.

Could the problem be something as simple as the electrical contacts on the body needing to be carefully cleaned with a minute amount of (perhaps) surgical spirit or vodka on a cotton bud? I recall reading about this problem on the old AP Forum, an you don't have much to lose by trying it. I once had a problem with one of my older lenses no longer working correctly with my DSLR body, and cleaning the contacts on the lens fixed it. All the other lenses worked as normal, so the lens was the suspect. But in your case it may be the camera body. Unlikely that Nikon would have said no fix if that was the case? I can't speak for Nikon, but perhaps that was a standard answer due to the age of the camera body. Designed obsolescence isn't what it used to be, and its length appears to get shorter every time there's a new model.

Designed obsolescence isn't what it used to be, and its length appears to get shorter every time there's a new model. I would be absolutely amazed if that were the case. Thing is they're not going to turn away business if they are in a position to do it, nor deliberately upset a customer. Sony might, but not Nikon, it's not in their DNA. If they're saying they don't have the part, they don't have the part. Now that's not to say that nobody will have the part - some specialist repairers keep them way beyond the 10 years after the end of production that Nikon or Canon do. (They might not keep models in production for as long these days, but they do keep fixing them for the same amount of time. In fact in general, planned obsolescence indeed isn't what it used to be - look at cars, they last far longer these days than they used to...) If it were a Canon, I have the contact details of someone who might have been able to help, but I've no need to know a Nikon man (sorry, couldn't think of an alliterative alternative there!).

I once had a problem with one of my older lenses no longer working correctly with my DSLR body, and cleaning the contacts on the lens fixed it. All the other lenses worked as normal, so the lens was the suspect. But in your case it may be the camera body. When a Nikon lens stops communicating with the body a number of things can happen. 1. Err is displayed 2. The aperture cannot be changed or appears to go to wide open 3. AF doesn’t work Loss of contact between lenses and body isn’t uncommon, somewhat more common when using a teleconverter. Normally simply removing and refitting the lens restores correct operation. I am sure Fen is aware of this. A damaged connection between the contact assembly and the body’s electronics is possible but, the contact assembly is common to all the more recent DSLR bodies. The likelihood of a spare not being available is small I suggest. It is also likely that there would have been prior symptoms of such a fault. Were the problem with the circuit board however I can see that being terminal as the body has been out of production for some years.

Chester + Geoff
Yeah, first thing I did when the problem first presented was to check the contacts.
The error report I got back from Nikon said the fault traced back to one of the circuit boards - hence no repair

It was a top of the range when purchased new, and had a faulty circuit board that linked/controlled all the complicated stuff we rarely used, and the part was obsolete and not available anywhere, so the oven could not be used. We replaced it with a very basic model that cost less than half the price, had no complex electronics, and was much simpler to use. If only such a choice was available when buying a digital camera.

Castle Cameras has a D800 with just 1000 shutter actuations at their Salisbury branch. It had 1054 shutter actuations when it arrived at my place Had a few more now as I've just been out to test it! Thanks for the post about them, the camera is practically unused - body is spotless.

It's funny, I was convinced that Castle had closed in Salisbury. Delighted to have been wrong, used them a fair bit over the years.

I'm generally a massive fan of LCE - it's my nearest shop, and they're generally great shoos and great people from top to bottom, but I never really warmed to the Salisbury one. Castle, though, top notch. Mind you, probably only been to Salisbury itself a couple of times since lockdown. Been to Amesbury Recycling Centre more than that...
