Oh well, my Nikon D800 is for all intents and purposes... dead. Focussing has gone, across all apertures and with any of my lenses. So I sent it off to Nikon for repair and they've said that they can't fix it as the parts aren't available. It's 11yrs old and now only useful if I want to take out of focus 'arty' photographs Which means I'm looking for something to replace it with. Either a second-hand D800/D850 or something completely different and sell all my other Nikon gear! I guess I'll be hitting the web and doing some research. Been so long since I've looked at buying a camera* I'm completely out of touch. * I did buy a Fuji XT-2 when they came out but that was in 2016

Bummer. Still good for macro and landscape?
If my 7D developed the same fault it might take me a while to notice as it still speeds most of it's time with the MP-E on it.

Time for mirrorless maybe? Shame it's gone down the tubes but I guess that's the way of all things electronic - when the parts are gone all that's left is a paperweight...

You do realise that when the D800 was released it was just below the single digit flagship. Getting the mirrorless equivalent would cost about £4000. On top of that an extra battery, FTZ and I suppose at least one new lens.
Its a pity that the D800 failed now. Shortly, D850 should be hitting the second hand market in large numbers as Nikon sell thousands of Z8. I'm not making any suggestions. Fen knows what he needs and what he can afford. I'm just an amateur that likes nice toys.

Bummer. Still good for macro and landscape? Nope. Not good for anything. This is one of the test shots I took the other day. 50mm

Time for mirrorless maybe? Never handled the Nikon Z series so no idea what they feel like. Also heard that there can be a few issues with the autofocus using the lens adaptor. And... that's an awful lot of money to spend at the moment

I did use them both alongside each other for a while but got rid of the D3 due to the weight. The secondhand D850 are going for about £1400 at the moment.

And... that's an awful lot of money to spend at the moment Shame to have to deal with this "under pressure". I regard it inevitable that I'll have to move to the Canon R system eventually when the DSLRs fail and hopefully that won't be until the "new factor" has worn off and the prices won't be so aspirational. I think the DSLR lenses work OK on an adapter. I've been using Fuji to get more used to the mirrorless paradigm. It is different from DSLR. Why Fuji? I had one of their small cameras and some lenses already and their H bodies are not unlike the Canon ones to hold.

I've got the Fuji XT-2 which is a fun camera to take around, but I've only got a couple of lenses and nothing that would be suitable for work. I also find that the Fuji doesn't handle so well at a crowded event with low lights.

The one thing I miss is the exposure preview and having to go back to estimating exposure compensation. The latest ELVs are very much improved but still not "perfect". The biggest bugbear is startup time from sleep and the second is ergonomics - Canon EOS are more straightforward to use. I'm guessing that Canon R, Sony, Nikon Z, Fuji X are probably quite alike simply because they are so complex. I still think of Canon R as first generation and that the next generation will be more interesting. I am able to be patient, it is only a hobby.

I'm shocked that Nikon no longer support repairs of the D800.... but until you mentioned it, I hadn't realised that the model was that old

Surely, it would be usable with some classic MF lenses, via an appropriate adapter?
I realise that this might not be ideal for you, but surely it would be better than binning it? If not - send it to me!

This is one of the test shots I took the other day. 50mm View AttachmentLooks watercolourish, nice but probably not terribly useful. I keep hearing good things about the D850 so that might be worth a try, otherwise another D800? You might send the dead one to Nick, he could probably do with a new doorstop.
