Not had much joy birding this year so far. Today missed a sedge warbler (probably) but saw this wren. Unusually singing from a very high exposed position. DSCF7851.jpg by Pete, on Flickr Quite a big crop - 600 mm lens on APS-C and then cropped quite hard - to about 1/4 frame I'd think.

Not much doing today but it is always a mistake to go out in the midday sun. Even the goldfinches were retiring. DSCF7882.jpg by Pete, on Flickr Believe it or not the exif for this next shot says 1/80s at 600 mm and this is a big crop (nearly 1/2) on APS-C. Image stabilisation has come a long way. Having said that I've lost my sense of judgement as to when Fuji's AF means it when it does a focus confirm and when it doesn't so I threw most away. Surprisingly it failed even to nail the great white egret that I decided to post for today's theme because it seemed an apt pose. DSCF7887.jpg by Pete, on Flickr

The jungle drums reported Wood Sandpipers at our local nature reserve, so I grabbed a couple of hours yesterday evening to try and get a photo or two. Either they're late migrating north, or they decided that Scotland wasn't for them and they were heading back. They certainly shouldn't be here mid-June. I tried to get all 3 in one shot, but a rather handsome Little Egret kept photobombing. We had a shocking scene at lunchtime. A female sparrowhawk struck, and caught a small bird which was inside the feeder's cage! It faffed for a few seconds trying to pull it out, got it, and departed. Obviously the camera was in the next room.

What's it got, a dragonfly?

Yeah, Hobbys predominantly predate on dragonflies, although they do occasionally take small birds

Very nice pictures of the flycatcher. I've only seen one once and it was on the far side of a river!
