The Great Bustard project is reporting the most nesting females they've ever had. I hear a male one has been spotted in Clacton on Sea... oh, wait a mo... They've spread out from Westminster...

We have had a hatched egg visible on camera this morning, no sign of junior yet, but hopefully we are swift parents!
We are definitely sparrow parents for a second time as the other swift box is making a great deal of noise and sparrows are flying in and out.
So that's 4 broods (blue tits, 2 sparrow, 1 swift) that we know of in a suburban garden. Not bad!

Just be aware that I've only ever done goat births, mum might be a bit nervous when I start putting clean straw down!

Back down the Avalon marshes to try for some Hobby pics. Within 5 minutes I saw this one perched. Sadly this was as good as it got , aside from a few seen hunting at extreme distance. Thankfully something else salvaged what could have been a wasted trip (see wildlife thread). hobby by Martin Bone, on Flickr

It is an oyster-catcher. Ringed too. Usually see them on soft ground at the edge of water - usually following the tide-line on sea beaches.

I have a feeling that I've read somewhere that the courtship display involves passing food in flight so these could be young birds "practising".

Yeah, I know it was an Oyster catcher (only because the friend I was with was a twitcher) so much so we are off to Titchwell today.
This was in Norfolk. I was around a metre away from it. It was screeching a bit at me though. lol.
