For a few minutes this evening, we had two groups of swifts making strafing runs up the front of the house, presumably to invetsigate the source of the calls (a speaker). Will this be the year we get a nest...?

This Mallard has her work cut out, especially as she took her ducklings out of the water onto an island with 2 common gulls on it. mother duck by Martin Bone, on Flickr I don't know if Mallards are known for being stupid, but several times I've seen them trying to rear ducklings in an obviously terrible place *year after year*, and the ducklings are lucky to last a week each time.

SWMBO rushed into the bathroom (luckily I was doing my teeth) this morning to tell me that a swift had landed on one of our boxes and looked in! That's the closest we've had to nesting so far, so fingers crossed...

The resident blackbirds have stripped the cherry tree of fruit. They've now turned their attention to the feral raspberry canes. Between them and the dogs I can't see me getting any for myself.
