Having said that I would rarely visit the AP website I have in fact used it a number of times recently to research lenses. That said, now that I have bought the lenses I want, I probably won’t be going back. The reviews I was reading were several years old relating to SLR lenses, unless I decide to buy mirrorless cameras in future there is no reason to look at any more reviews.
I doubt my visits to the forum generated much, if any, advertising income so it is pretty unlikely that Kelsey Media will miss me either as a forum member or as a site browser. I suppose that if all the forum members who have subscriptions were to cancel they might notice but I don’t see that resulting in a change of heart.

I've probably looked at the AP site more since the forum left to be fair. I'll see something on FB and follow a link to read something of interest and then spend a few minutes looking at other things. When we had the forum it was the only reason I visited the site. Looking at the posts here which are most popular, how many are actually about photography? I suspect that the powers that be realised that actaully what we were using the forum for was a 'slightly more photography focused' version of social media and that we did not in fact represent most of their readers. Let's face it, if we did, the magazine would have gone bust years back.

The forum operated as a separate entity and apart from the occasional post from an AP staff member, we were left on our own. This resulted in a separation from AP and the commercial aim. Remember monthly comps? Remember APOY? If AP wanted us to feel part of the magazine's culture/ads/photography/customer then it needed to dip its toe into that forum at least now and then. It didn't. How well it is doing now? I see plenty posts on FB which are not very inspiring. I am happy to be here instead.

Absolutely, but I think to be honest that was a natural side-effect of the reduction of staffing on the mag. A decade or so back, it had a very large staff - full time art and news editors, a technical editor and team, an editorial one, even their own photographer, an a PA to the editor - you name it. Oh, and an actual online editor. These days, there are a tiny handful working on the mag, so there's just not the time to devote to anything else.

There's a reason why I called this a 'social club'.

I reckon this new 'film' malarkey might just be the Next Big Thing.
Film is going back to being a rich man/woman's preserve then? Maybe, but I have not seen pictures of Princess Kate using her grand mother in law's old Leica yet.

I don't "do" Facebook and have hardly visited the AP website in years, it never really looked inspiring or tempted me to stay on it and click on anything

When DP Review finally stops publishing new material I may visit the AP site more often.

Andy Westlake has had a go with a Nikon Z8. Read on we find that this brief experience was at the European launch event at Photo London. There was a time when AP would get advance experience, under NDA, so that a serious 'first look' could be published after announcement day. Another thing, AP in photographic circles used to be Amateur Photographer 1st and Associated Press 2nd. Now because of Google's interpretation of my browsing habits AP takes me to Associated Press 1st. I hope that AP survives.
I now get a pop up inviting me to subscribe. The choices are 'not interested' or 'subscribe'. I have not deleted all those cookie things. I do subscribe. I would expect a welcome back John, even although only from 'pretend AI'. At least it doesn't tell me that I am running an add blocker. But if the algorithm does conclude that I am not a subscriber then why not tell me to disable the blocker?

I wonder if AP staffers have been told that under no circumstances must they contribute to Martin's 'initiative' site.

I wonder if AP staffers have been told that under no circumstances must they contribute to Martin's 'initiative' site. Why ? They have no reason to visit as far as I can see. The AP Forum is long gone so "end of".

I wonder if AP staffers have been told that under no circumstances must they contribute to Martin's 'initiative' site. Errr... okay... Firstly, is the Snappers Social Club is a threat to the AP site... nope - so no conflict of interest or any other reason that would stop them if they wanted to. Secondly, this is a independant, public forum with a membership that is interested in photography. Why would the owners of AP want to stop people coming here. Thirdly, who is to say that they don't visit the forum on their own time. No law states that they have to use their real names. I know of at least two AP staffer who visits this site from time to time.
