Over the years the temperature markings have rubbed off our oven. This year things have gone awry and it fell to me to set the oven to cook the Christmas cake (yes I know that it's late). It came out burned to a cinder. SWMBO is very unhappy with me.

Should've bought an oven thermometer.

Listening to the Reith lectures, this time, on violence. Not sure I'll listen to any more.
It did make me wonder about how things affect us over our lifetimes. One thing that strikes me is that I remember sad or bad times more than the good times. The times I was ill. The time my mum died. Loving but not being able to have. I wonder if we are hardwired to remember the sad times as a warning and threat? We are vulnerable human beings after all. Genetics win.
As for violence. I'm sure given certain circumstances I could be driven to it. In fact, I think we all have that capability. It just depends on which buttons are pushed.

Second cake attempt is in the oven now. D-in-Law decided to help and so it was done in half the time.
She's a 'force of nature' in the kitchen and makes Mr Ramsay look like a pussycat! Still, it was very enjoyable working with her.
Hopefully there will be a success in a few hours.

I'm about to check the progress of the actual bake right now. I see that the oven knob is a good (angular) 80 degrees lower than I had it. That doesn't mean 80 deg C of course, although it might!

If it's anything like my oven think of it this way. 4pm - 80 degC 5pm - 100 degC 6pm - c150 degC 7pm - 160 degC 8pm - 180 degC 9pm - 200 degC

I have just changed our lower oven bulb for the second time in a few months. At least it was quicker this tim and I knew to set the clock afterwards.

It may also be responsible for a few burned dinners. Fortunately I was able to get an old instrument from work that has a small but very accurate oven, so we've been able to keep craft use completely separate from food.
