I suffer from paroxysmal afib so it is not constant and only happens every so often and controlled by meds. Last night at 2145 my heart went into Afib and still was when I got up which is very unusual. Using my GP online request form at 0800 I had an appointment at 1000 with a young lady GP who I’ve not seen before. She was really good, my consultation was around 25 mins, where the standard is 10 mins. Whilst there she spoke to the admissions at the SDEC (Same Day Emergency Care) as I was still in Afib. Arrived at the hospital and within 15 mins of getting booked in, I had an ECG, BP and bloods taken. Admittedly I’ll probably have an hour or 2 wait for the results and a doctor consultation, however considering the slagging off the NHS get, and probs right at dome times, but so far I’ve been really impressed. I’m also quite happy that my AF was still present so at least they can see what is happening. I'm glad you were seen so quickly. A horrid experience, but glad they were good at the hospital. I've always found ours to be the same - and very thorough. Hope they stabilize you again soon and sort something out to make it remain so.

I think being here will escalate things further quicker, which is why my GP was keen to get me here when still symptomatic. I was due a AF review at my GP in March anyway.

After all that, I'm home. the only negative was the quietly spoken dr, whose first language was not English. I had to keep asking him to repeat. My bloods so far, came back fine, no sign of heart attack, which had been my fear. Awaiting results for Thyroid and cholesterol, which he thinks, from looking at me eyes will be high.
Anyway, will be further referred for another echogram on my heart, some other test which I will have to go to one of the Manchester hospitals for (I really couldn't grasp what he was saying about that). He has increased my medication and put me on blood thinners and statins (which is open for review when my further blood tests results are with my GP in a few days).
Overall, very happy with the service.

Overall, very happy with the service. Good to hear Nige. It always astounds me when I come accross a medic who lacks the most basic communication skills and fails to make any effort despite being repeatedly asked. I remember once on Room 101 there was a Doctor who wanted to put doctors into room 101 on the grounds that a fair number of them were totally unsuited for the job.

Glad it is all up for review. I'd feel more than a little apprehensive about the blanket blood thinners and statins. I've known too many people just shoved onto those without having clear results showing you need them! Hope you can get real info from the GP when you see him/her.

Hope you can get real info from the GP when you see him/her. If its just for a few days I doubt they will cause any major issues, and are probably a sensible option given its a heart issue. Start making a noise if they are extended without good info as to why. Statins haven't had a good press but there was a very interesting study published recently where one group was given statins and the other a placebo, and both asked to keep a side effect diary. At the end of it, both groups reported similar levels of side effects.

Statins tend to be given to older people and older people tend more to have aches and pains anyway and I say that as an older person on statins.

I also have high bad cholesterol but also extremely high good cholesterol. I turned down statins. I also gave up on BP medication when it was causing nasty side effects.I had blood tests recently and BP measured. My BP is spot-on normal and I haven't had feedback from the blood test. I am still alive. I have to say I consider it a knee-jerk prescription from GPs.

Blood thinners initially when I was diagnosed in 2020 were dismissed due to my age. Anyone with AF is at increased risk of having clots from and therefore at risk of a stroke. I was told that when I reached 60 I would be on them no matter what. I am 59 this year so after this I am not really surprised I have been put on them. As for the statins, I have been put on 20mg now. If my cholesterol levels come back OK he said the GP might take me off them (or indeed increase the dose if it is high).
I know a couple of folk who are slightly younger than me who are on statins.
I would rather not be on a blood thinner but I equally don't fancy being at risk of a stroke.

The only problem I have with my statin dose is swallowing the damn pill. It is the biggest tablet I’ve ever seen and is now my nightly challenge.

I started statins in my 40s, no noticeable side effects.

I assume that the large pill is the 80mg version. You get used to them. As I have mentioned before I survived a rather serious cardiac event nearly 20 years ago.
Today while hedge laying I came upon a large 'challenging' piece of thorn about five inches diameter and rejected chainsaw assistance. No more than 5 minutes with my felling axe and it was laid. Not bad for a near eighty year old. I did accept help cutting the remaining stob. Its nice to do the skilful stuff traditionally but sensible to accept powered assistance for the boring brute force sawing.
