I reckon that Sainsbury's own label Marmite equivalent is better than the real stuff.

Odd, I could have sworn I'd replied to this. Not that it was with anything particularly scintillating! ONly to say that I don't know about Sainsbury's 'marmite' as we don't have one nearby, but I find the Tesco version to be too salty. A jar of real marmite lasts ages round here anyway as I'm the only one who ever eats it. Even the cat isn't impressed which surprised me as most of our previous cats have enjoyed the occasional scrambled egg with marmite as a treat.

Can't say I prefer any own-label brand to the original, I think they all lack something in comparison - they mostly taste to me like Marmite with a small dose of the rather unpleasant Vegemite, but it's all a matter of taste rather than on objective "better", so there's no right or wrong answer. Except that you're obviously wrong, Mick.

Why take the chance when it's so easy to get the real thing?

Don't like the real thing nor its imitations, gimme Bovril any day, especially over butter slathered on crumpets

Sainsbury's marmite is a bit more runny and a bit less salty than the real thing. Maybe that's why it's cheaper.
It's easier to spread and I like the taste better as well.

Marmite vs vegemite used to be (and may well be) a culture war item here in NZ. When I was young, there was a conspiracy theory that marmite - which is made by a company owned by the Seventh Day Adventist church here - contained meat products...which would cause catholics to sin by consuming meat on forbidden days. Vegemite was made by an American owned company, although it was bought in 2017 by Bega Cheese Ltd, an Australian concern. Marmite is sweeter than vegemite, here. I prefer vegemite.
