I think one of my CF cards has gone mammaries skyward. I downloaded the first 15 or so photos OK, but then it started giving me error messages on my laptop, which is now telling me I need to format the thing. There should be another 150-odd pics on there, luckily nowt precious.
Any suggestions as to the best tools to try to retrieve them?

Sandisk used to have free file recovery software when you bought one of their cards

Sandisk used to have free file recovery software when you bought one of their cards I was just looking that up. It is limited to recovering deleted files now. I don't know of any commercial file recovery tools. Their success depends on how badly the card is broken. I guess recovery is more likely to be possible if the card was recently formatted.

Sandisk still provides the recovery software download address and activation code with new cards. Limited to 1 year from the software download or activation withe the code that comes with a card - probably the latter. Probably worth trying even if it is only supposed to recover deleted files.

I've had the card a decade, so that's out then. I've downloaded something that's currently scanning while I eat me supper, we shall see if it works.

Hopefully the card and not the laptop's card reader port that's gone.

Hopefully the card and not the laptop's card reader port that's gone. I've tried both the laptop's USB ports with the same result (and two different readers) so I think it's the card. Stellar Recovery can see the files, but wants to charge me £49.95 (duck that) to recover them. Recuva can't read the disk. Harrumph!

The free version of Recuva has always worked well, IME.
I'm not going to claim that it's the VERY best out there, but it's always done a good job for me. Also, it's - ummmmm..... free!

B*ll*cks... damned cross-posting!
If Recuva won't touch it, I don't know what else to suggest.

Just remembered:- Puran Utilities. I used it quite a lot, at one time.
Might be worth a try. (it's free, too. )

If you have anything that uses SD cards Sandisk SDs are really cheap theses days CFs not so much, but, if you recon you need a new CF card anyway... Alternatively if you can get a delivery address to me - whatever this sites pm equivalent or via FB I can post you a sandisc code.

Think it was a free Microsoft recovery program I used when I needed one, FWIW.
