Silly question but, have you tried connecting the camera via USB cable to access the photographs? I haven't, I'll give that a go. I've always used a card reader, so never thought of that. Happened to me when my reader packed up. I go into review images, open the flap, plug in the cable, then plug into the USB on my PC. Loads fine now.

I've always used USB. Before I bought into Digital a friend lent his camera (Canon 350 D I think) to someone else to try out and got it back with several of the camera CF card pins bent beyond use. With that in mind I tend to put cards in once and leave them there. If the USB transfer works then you know the reader is the problem rather than the card. If your habit is to delete images from the card rather than formatting it (in camera) when copies and backups are safely made I'd suggest using format every now and again.

I have used PhotoRec on several occasions with good success. Its a free download. It comes packaged with Testdisk. You have to install both.

What was the last camera to use CF cards? The D300/s and D4s as far as I can remember although CF was an option in the D5. Pretty much everything else uses SD or CFexpress now, neither of which has pins to bend. One has to be pretty cack handed to bend the pins in a CF slot with a CF card.

Certainly the Canon 5DS has a CF slot and an SD slot. Given the relative cost of CFs one assumes they are on the way out. Never underestimate the cackhandedness of human beings.

I'm fairly sure that my Canon cameras have a CF card and a SD card. The newest camera is a 5Ds. The last camera I bought (Fuji X-H2S) takes a CF-express and a SD card. I was shocked at the price of the CF-express card and that the smallest size I could buy was 64GB. Reusing a 32 GB SD card the camera will hold a year's worth of photos!

I doubt that the USB cable will help as the camera tells me the card is unformatted (it isn't). I reckon it's dead, Jim. ETA I've tried it, does nowt. Card is fukt.
Incidentally, how is anyone surprised that Mr Photosaurus rex here uses an obsolete data format?

I've got a 8MB one here, yes you read that right. I do have a larger one, a 64GB if I recall correctly. I no longer have anything that uses CF cards so if I can find it I'll bring it to Salisbury and you can have it Adrian.

I bought my first, of three, D5 in September 2022, since then I have, apparently, taken over 20,000 images or 18 64GB XQD cards.I think you need to get out more.
I have some pretty small CF cards from Psion organiser days.
