Anyone got any favourite podcasts? I particularly like Ben Youngs and Dan Cole's "For the love of rugby". Richard Osman and Marina Hyde's "The rest is entertainment" is a favourite too. Their take down of Liz Truss' book is brilliant, but the general behind the scenes background to popular culture is great.

I once listened to quite a few " My dad wrote a porno" when I was driving through Europe and it was good company for a solo drive. I was crying with laughter for a lot of it. I never completed the series though.

I'm a luddite who hates all podcasts. All of them. Every one. Some BBC Radio 4 programmes appear to be described as 'podcasts' when later available on the BBC Sounds website, so not all podcasts are equal. I've tried some of the ones that I presume are 'real' podcasts (i.e. not originally Radio 4), and the quality (technical and intellectual) varies a lot. Also, some that come with warnings about 'adult content' appear to have been made for listeners with the mental age of a child.

Doesn't matter who made them.

I take it you listened to them to confirm they were meant for people with a childlike mental age as opposed to someone that had a sense of humour? Or did you just make that assumption?

What is a podcast? I've never heard nor seen one, no TV, only listen to about an hour of classic FM at bedtime. I'm a genuine Luddite, no mobile phone, no farcebook, twatter or other similar rubbish. Still running Windows 7.

Still running Windows 7. Google it. That'll give you the answer. You don't need a TV for that and you never know, you may find something you want to listen to on the wireless internet device. There are also a lot of news ones that go into a lot of depth about current affairs.

I’ve nothing against advancing technology but I like to have some clear idea of the benefits before adopting. Pod casts might, or might not, be a good thing but experience teaches that I rarely listen to things I have recorded so adding to the list of unwatched/unplayed recordings seems pointless. If I haven’t got time to listen live I certainly won’t listen later. Who knows what I am “missing” if I don’t know about it I’m not really missing it.

Still running Windows 7. I think it is just a moniker for a pre-recorded radio program with a cast of one. They used to be called repeats when the original went out live but I don't think much does these days. I think most are self-generated content not subject to critical review before transmission as a broadcast program would be. I prefer books. I got a Pratchett joke today that I'd missed a dozen times. It is in Guards Guards. The author is describing the very run down Watch House, having an inscription above the door FABRICATI DIEM, PVNC which character Fred Colon offers as meaning 'To Protect and to Serve' whereas it now seems clear that it means (cod Latin and all), 'make my day, punk'. I can't believe that it has taken me years to get that one.

I can't believe that it has taken me years to get that one. Nothing to do with being a cast of one. Not what they used to call repeats. Take the podcast by the journalists, Emily Maitlis, Jon Sopel and Lewis Goodall as an example. They are well known journalists who have a daily podcast (which is just a programme at the end of the day, but rather than being played on the radio, you listen to it as a stand alone program) they go in depth into current affairs etc. If it was just being played on the radio, live everyone would have to listen to it on that channel (LBC in this case) instead you can listen to it online through whatever player you choose. Yes there can be weirdo's who can have one on Youtube or wherever. I have listened to a fair few by Jay Rayner, the food critic who chats with guests over lunch. I listened to it in my car on the internet connected player or through CarPlay. Just like radio channels/TV channels/CD's/Tapes/eight track/wax cylinders, you can look and choose what takes your fancy and may possibly interest you. TBH a lot of the time the ads ruin things, but you can skip blocks of time (20 secs or so) to miss those out.
