Yes, it's just an umbrella term for any prerecorded audio programme. Sometimes they are also filmed and I can tolerate those if interesting, whereas just audio is utterly impenetrable to me. I don't do audio-only unless it's music, I'm just too visual a person.

Some BBC Radio 4 programmes appear to be described as 'podcasts' when later available on the BBC Sounds website, so not all podcasts are equal. I've tried some of the ones that I presume are 'real' podcasts (i.e. not originally Radio 4), and the quality (technical and intellectual) varies a lot. Also, some that come with warnings about 'adult content' appear to have been made for listeners with the mental age of a child. I take it you listened to them to confirm they were meant for people with a childlike mental age as opposed to someone that had a sense of humour? Or did you just make that assumption? If they come with warnings about 'strong language' and 'adult content' I naively assume they are for adults (but I have found some that are made for adults too). Perhaps ones that appear to have been made for listeners with a 'childlike mental age' are targeting the dementia demographic, but I haven't got there yet so don't appreciate them.

What is a podcast? I've never heard nor seen one, no TV, only listen to about an hour of classic FM at bedtime. I'm a genuine Luddite, no mobile phone, no farcebook, twatter or other similar rubbish. Still running Windows 7. I do have a TV (but 99.9% of what I watch is recorded from Freeview HD to view at a convenient time with any trailers or ads on fast forward), I sometimes listen to Radio 3 and 4 (but less Radio 3 recently since its dumbing down to compete with Classic FM shows no sign of ending), I have an ancient 'pay as you go' 'dumb' phone that I used for about £2 worth of calls last year (it's mostly used for receiving texts for internet banking and NHS appointment reminders), I don't use Facebook (but my wife does for a gardening group, and at my suggestion misspelt her name and got her date of birth wrong), and I don't use twitter.
However, I have been using Window 10 for the last few years (since you are using W7 with software for internet access, there may be risks because some antivirus and intrusion prevention software may require a current version of Windows to work reliably).
Perhaps we are not luddites, merely people with different priorities (lifestyle and financial) to the rest of the herd.

I listen to a podcast about what I want to hear about. Not like radio which is trying to please a wider audience
