IT'S HOME!!!! I'll try to do some glamour shots tomorrow as I'm not long back from the wilds of East Anglia, and got stuff to sort out. Ed has, amongst other things, cleaned the lens and iris, and resuscitated an entirely solid shutter mech. It looks very good indeed. There is some loss of nickel plate on the back where he has removed the nasty verdigris but other than that it looks very good indeed. I did tell him I was after a user rather then a looker, so that bothers me not at all. Next task... get time to read the manual, try the shutter, and load up the Fomapan! Read the manual!, you're a crazy fool, whatever next? He probably wants at avoid another shutter repair. The way the Contax shutter is designed, it needs the ribbons replaced regularly (every 10 or so years). They are a consumable. |

Note to self. Do not photograph in a hurry whilst knackered just to please you lot (much as I like you). The comedy effort below with the hilarious focus point is what happens. I'll have to make a better effort at the weekend in daylight. I've tried it, and it works - though at 1/10 of a second the shutter sounds disconcertingly like a chicken. Contax have a better rangefinder than Leica. The prewar Contaxes were a superior camera - easier film loading, a shutter which wouldn't burn through, and better lenses than Leica. They were, however, more expensive. |

They were, however, more expensive. Having handled someone's IIIf, I think, the Barnack Leicas are jewel-like, small and light. The Contax, by way of contrast, oozes solidity, it's a tank. Totally different approaches to the same game. |

So do I! Somewhere I had something labelled "Leica", thought that would be the closest I ever got to owning a Leica... I have a Contax take-up spool (in a Voigtlander Vito II), thought that would be the closest I ever got to owning a Contax... I have a Rolleiflex filter pouch for a strap, thought.... I'm beginning to see a theme! Lol I thought I was the only mad beggar who did that, I bought a Leica coloured lens filter so I ‘owned‘ a Leica item. Still got it somewhere in amongst the detritus of camera life |
