Less than 100 days until I'm back in Japan so obviously I'm already in the state of decision paralysis over what kit to take. The digital side is fine (Lumix S5, 20-60, 85), but which film option? Its role will be for snapshot use - so as close to point and shoot as possible.
Baggage allowance is much tighter this time as we are on a different airline, so it needs to be compact and light. Can't take as much kit as this year (tripod, 6x12 pinhole, Holga, Rollei, K2, FM10, Sony NEX-3n and a bunch of lenses: all got used, in case you think I went OTT!). This rules out the Pentax K2 and my pinhole cameras which need a tripod. The options are as follows:
Holga Rollei B35 Halina compact Pentax MG
Pros and cons for each:
Holga: +light +fun +120 negs -no real exposure control -guess focus Rollei: +very small +decent lens +fun +light -scale focus -had some reliability issues -unpaired metering can result in errors Halina: +very light +compact +no Fs given whether it is raining -worst lens of the options -very limited exposure control Pentax: +best image quality of the options +auto exposure +lens choice -heaviest of the options -largest of the options
Tending toward Pentax as whatever lenses I pick can also be used on my S5 via adapter. Looking at getting a M28/2.8 which would pair perfectly, then one of my 50s and we're good to go. But still have reservations over the overall size of the kit vs just taking the Rollei, for example.
Help me out!

Keep it simple by carrying two Pentax cameras and three lenses, a wide angle, a standard and short telephoto (85mm or 100mm f2.8).

Take a Vito II - great lens and it folds small enough to fit in a trouser pocket

I should perhaps have added, just buying another camera isn't *necessarily* a solution in this case.

I should perhaps have added, just buying another camera isn't *necessarily* a solution in this case. It isn't? "Necessarily"!! If I could get a Pen EE or similar, quality half frame point and shoot, that would be the no-brainer. Not seen one listed at a sensible price for ages though.

Is it Ground Hog day?
What did you learn from the last time you asked? What did you get to Japan and think 'I wish I had brought the xxxx, I could have done YYY' ?
Personally for travel I have given up taking half a camera shop with me, not having to drag around a full frame DSLR and three f/2.8 lenses lets me spend more time looking at where I am, the what gear to use question is replaced with the how do I make the most of my EOS M6 and my iPhone. Yes there are times I lust for my old L lenses especially the 80-200 f/2.8 and the 180mm macro but compromises have been made, if I want to go back to that look it would be with Sigma Art lenses but I am not there yet.
The Pen EE is very cute but has the Hipster tax, there are other half frames to consider, how about a Yashica Samurai ? (Not a real question as they are comparatively large. )

Decide now how much stuff you are prepared to carry, and choose accordingly. Too much choice is not always helpful when faced with this dilemma. Personally, I believe that abundant choice is overrated.
Why can't the Lumix be used for 'snapshot' pictures? Just set it to 'auto everything' when used like this to get the full 'point and shoot' experience.

Kind of. My little Sony just about died in March/April, the shutter is goosed. That led to me getting a new camera, which is considerably larger and heavier. This year in Japan I took a lot and used it all, I had specific uses in mind and that was fine because we had a ridiculous baggage allocation. I was carrying the Sony plus one or two others each day, depending on where we were going and what we were doing. This time I'm strictly taking just one digital and one film camera though, travelling light. I enjoyed using the Rollei but it was the K2 which got the most use other than digital. The K2 is significantly bigger than the other film options listed, and weighs almost to the gram the same as the S5. The film option needs to be smaller, something that can go in a pocket/bag even when photography isn't the purpose of the day. I'm very much swaying toward taking the tiny Pentax MG over the Rollei. It's been more reliable and whilst it is aperture priority only you can do exposure compensation via the ISO dial. The Halina is 'natsukashii' - nostalgic, but I'm sure the images will leave me wondering why I didn't take something better. The Holga is just the Holga, great fun, but hit and miss. There, I think I've answered my conundrum. Thank you.

I have decided, the S5 plus one of the listed options. Snapshot is spontaneous, and relies on having something with you. I wouldn't be carrying the S5 when popping to the shops or out for dinner, whereas the small option can stay with me. It doesn't *have* to be a film camera but as I don't have a digital compact, it will be.

The Lumix and your camera phone would seem adequate. Of your suggested film cameras the little Rollei is the only one that I own. It survived two climbs to the Nelion summit of Mt Kenya but never got to Batian. The Batian failure was not the camera's fault. .

My camera doesn't have a phone... My phone has a camera, and it's rubbish. Routinely out of focus images, terrible dynamic range, and pretty poor quality all round. It's just not up to the quality of even a toy camera with film, unless the light is *just* right.

That a pity. I was going to recommend a good Malbec. (Or have I misunderstood? )
