You may recall a few years ago the whole visa system went down and none of the card readers worked. I was in Tesco and had to give the embryo working there a lesson on the card swiping thing with the carbon paper (they obvs kept a load in case of emergency) I wonder what they’ll do now, now that they don’t have raised numbers. You don't need the raised numbers or a click-clack machine. They're just a time saving device. You can fill in a card slip manually. The biggest flaw in that system is nothing to do with the banks or the retailers. My wife hasn't had to do a manual transaction in a while, but you'd be amazed how many people haven't used the most basic security device on their cards, that make them useless in this situation. They then seem surprised when the cashier won't accept their payment when they have just signed it in front of them (technically the cashier should retain the card to prevent fraud). In the hotel I saw quite a lot of Americans had printed "check ID" in the signature box of their non-chip/PIN cards. I'd rather someone checked my photo ID rather than assess if my signature was faked.

Up until chip/PIN whenever I used either my UK card or my Spanish Bank card in Spain, we had to show some form of ID even though it was never a thing here in the UK.

It would be useful if everyone, from a young age could get a photo driving licence. If some people are not licenced to drive that would not be a problem. There would be no valid classes of vehicle shown. They would be i.d. cards in all but name.

The enormous database the govternment will insist on linking it to, available to any government department that asks, not to mention the CIA, NSA and any private company that stumps up the loot? No.

That is why I hated Treese's proposal for ID cards. I am not agin' ID cards as such.

We are heading towards a cash less society everything done by card to avoid fraud. A regime installed by bigger fraudsters tha the likes of us. The MPs and bankers get away with millions and we can’t afford to buy a house or food and if we can we can’t we can’t afford to keep warm

I used to fly based on an expired RBS Bank Card with a photo. When I realised it was expired I got a Citizen's Card (usually used by 18 year olds to get served booze) as that was the quickest ID I could get. Still have it despite now having a photo licence and photo bus pass.

I whipped out the Citz. Card.

Of course ID would need an associated database. Photos from every five years from birth (or entry to the UK), DNA, finger prints, all addresses used with dates, criminal convictions, criminal warnings and those funny things that can given by local council jobsworths, link to the NHS by NHS number plus anything else that has a database in which we might appear. To handle such a database would require a company with superlative expertise in government IT. I would suggest Crapita.
