I found out later that the post existed to allow the police to hire somebody who would help them fill their racial minorities and disabled employees quotas, and that the post had been taken by a lady who allowed them to tick both boxes. She had no relevant experience and had to learn 'on the job'. It would be interesting to know how you "found out" that information, and would allow us to decide how much credibility to give the story. I met somebody who had recently retired from that force, and she told me what her job had been until retirement. I then told her about the job I had applied for a few years previously, and she was able to explain what had happened. Basically, being over 30, not in a racial minority group or disabled, I never had a chance of being considered for the job. That particular police force has had no reported problems like the NI police have had recently, but I would love to know if the recruitment policies of other police forces was or still is similar to the one I encountered. It's tempting to say that I found the information a leaked spreadsheet placed on a website - presumably everybody would accept that without question.

My wife was head of HR for a police force a few years back, and I would say that what you were told is likely to be somewhat exaggerated. Forces were under significant pressure to recruit more ethnic minority officers at the time, for sure, but the way of tackling that was by putting in more effort to get them to apply in the first place. There certainly weren't any criteria at any point of recruitment to not appoint white able-bodied males over 30 to any roles, certainly not civilian ones, if they were the best candidates. That has a whiff that originates in Melton Mowbray about it.

There is a strong argument to appoint police officers who are part of communities being policed.

I gave you a like for that Kate although I know that we are both a bit naive on this issue. An island should not be partitioned. That goes equally for Ireland and Britain. I suggest you move to Costa Rica and try preaching that vacuous crap there. Errr, Costa Rica ain't an island... Were you thinking Dominican Republic & Haiti?

They would become Ireland's problem. Even when taking their revenge on the UK for throwing them under a bus? - As they will see it. The republican vote is increasing every year. It is only a matter of time for their majority to be large enough to hold a referendum to join the South. That is if the south want them. A few years ago they certainly did not.

They could go the Indie route. Whatever the outcome I fear another phase of guns and bombs appears inevitable but firmly believe it is the right of the citizens of NI to decide their own future and (other than the citizens of the Republic should NI wish to join them) it is nobody else's business.
