Any one else annoyed by the High Court’s ruling on LEZ I’m disgusted they can ride rough shod over the people who now have to change their vehicles to comply or face massive costs

The vehicles that will be penalised have to be fairly old (private vehicles) but different rules apply to commercial vehicles. There's been some form of penalty for goods vehicles for years, not forgetting the congestion charge. Non Londoners will see those rules and think mountain out of a molehill.

I suppose it depends in what you call "old". My "new" car (bought in 2013) has to pay, so I'll have to find out how the system works when we visit our children. We have two one in the North and one in the South, both inside the LEZ. Certain HGVs have had to pay for a long time. I think they widened the category to include certain light goods vehicles more recently. A lot of camper vans got caught, which made the newspapers. Whether it is mountain or molehill for out-of-towners depends on how easy it is to pay. There is a "by camera" camera toll road near us. Unlike stopping at a pay-gate there is just a sign by the roadside. There is until midnight to pay online but I've come very close to getting a penalty because I have forgotten. I assume the LEZ will work by number plate recognition so I expect the car will be counted in and counted out of the zone and have to pay something for each day between crossings. I also expect to have to be proactive about it or get a penalty charge as well, this is how the local toll road works.

My car VW Caddy is adapted with ramp etc for my wheelchair was registered on a 58 plate so definitely not new but also a Diesel. Age and fuel against it😕 I can’t afford a replacement so this one is stuck with us

I'm sure this has absolutely nothing to do with the global oversupply of new cars. According to the TfL site my car is compliant and I'd be helping to improve the air quality if I drove it there: "You do not need to pay a daily ULEZ charge to drive in the zone, and are helping to improve air quality across London." They have a registration plate checker... tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/check-your-vehicle/

I read somewhere that a survey (as in collection of roadside data, counting vehicles etc.) suggested 85%+ of vehicles in Uxbridge were already compliant. For sure there will be some folk disadvantaged, but there's no excuse to not improve air quality.

Bear in mind it was a Tory idea in the first place and Khan was more or less forced into adopting the extension or not get some government money, I find the idea of Tory councils objecting to it a bad joke.

For sure there will be some folk disadvantaged, but there's no excuse to not improve air quality. That's the kind of statistic cropping up in the news but it is never translated into an absolute number of vehicles. I'm always a bit surprised at the number of "new" cars said to be in circulation. The main objective is to take cars and light goods vehicles off the road in order to reduce congestion but it is politically difficult to admit to this. Once the LEZ is in place they will find ways to squeeze it I am sure, especially if the size of the pie is as small as 15% of the car population.

Glasgow has now implemented a(n) LEZ and our car has scraped through by 6 months. It wouldn't be a massive inconvenience for us if we couldn't drive in the city centre because who likes driving in the city centre anyway? Public transport in Glasgow isn't too bad and I'd much rather get around on foot or use the subway. I do feel for small businesses who maybe are having to replace delivery vans etc though.

Definitely bad, Steve. Not so sure about the "joke" part, since it's a long way from being funny.
Typical of the Tories to operate with such shameless hypocrisy.

As far as I can see it is more about revenue than air quality.
It is also a tax on those least able to afford it which is despicable in anybody’s book.

Most of these old cars will be off the road within a few years whether there is Ulez or not. The purpose of the scheme is to justify (?) the installation of lots of traffic cameras so that a general road pricing scheme can be brought in for all cars.

Or is it just some right wing conspiracy theory? I've heard it suggested before but from from some climate denier that seems to have gone full eejit on his content to appeal to a certain demographic. In better news apparently the green man will be staying on for slightly longer to allow pedestrians to cross the road up here. I still think they could go further, particularly at peak times, to make it quicker to walk than drive in more cases....put the green man on for 5 minutes with every rotation of the lights during school run times? Still got temporary 4 way lights here which are making it quicker and far less frustrating for me to cycle than drive to some jobs.

The year is 2497 and rag-tag assortment of space craft are carrying the remnants of the human race across the universe seeking a habitable planet to settle on.
"Grandpa, why did nobody take any action to stop the Earth becoming uninhabitable?"
"They tried, but they were blocked by a race of people known as the Boomers, who decided we shouldn't do anything because it was inconvenient or not cost effective.".
