According to a recent factory tour video on YouTube Kodak are increasing production on film again, FWIW. Not surprised, there appears to be no end of folk willing to pay their grossly inflated prices. Milk that market whilst they can. Aye, suspect things are still a long way off with the economies of scale and competition in the market compared to 20 years ago. And this afternoon I bumped into a lady with a Lumix taking pictures of her dog in the park.

While fewer people are using dedicated cameras, more images are being taken and shared around, than at any time in history. Even modest phones take better images than most family snapshot cameras from the past.
It is just the inevitability of change taking place.

Film isn't expensive if you bulk load and process your own monochrome.

Old times sake? I'm lazy. I welcome digital. Let the technology do the heavy lifting while I concern myself with higher concepts.

If, like me, you have a cupboard full of interesting old cameras, it's the only way to use them.

It's simple, innit. Take the picture, add a filter in an app, share with friends/family on FB/WhatsApp, forget. Why bother with the faff of doing it with a camera, transferring the images, probably spending more time in post, before exporting to storage and then attaching to a media post. We're weird, basically. Photographers that is. All Apps etc are phone friendly/centred it’s all going to be phone based, even my iPad can’t do stuff as easily as my ancient iPhone

They basically want the camera to be a phone/tablet (bigger LCD please), to be able to run apps on it - do almost everything except ring people up. It is an utterly surreal discussion thread.

Didn't samsung try something like that some years ago? End result was as big as a camera and as slow as a phone.

I think Zeiss also had a crack at it but not sure if it went beyond a concept.

Presumably it was as slow as android to boot, flattened the battery in 30 hours without being used, lost security support after 3 years and designed to be sent to landfill shortly after that age. No thanks.

No thanks. Hundred quid on ebay if you want to find out, but I'm with you on the no thanks. One the bright side when the updates stop stuff doesn't randomly stop working.

I really struggle to take pictures with my phone. No stability. Everything is always wonky. Much prefer the heft of my DSLR in my hands. I'm usually pretty impressed by what people can do with a phone because I rarely manage it! My main gripe with phone cameras is a lack of things to play with - can't change lens, aperture, shutter speed... You can't change lenses in the way you mean, but many have several lenses. My iPhone has 3. It records images in DNG files if I choose to (downside they are very big so if storage is an issue you can't do hundreds!). I have apps were I can set my shutter speed (both of which also save DNG). using the iPhones own camera app I can also set aperture but I think it is AI rather than real aperture. I find I use my phone far more than my cameras now, although I must admit I sometimes wish I had my "real" camera with me Just now showing it with 3 separate photos (not different editing of the same photo) This is the photo as is with no change to aperture and camera default setting and focused on wall picture Untitled by Nigel G, on Flickr Here then changing the aperture settings Untitled by Nigel G, on Flickr Untitled by Nigel G, on Flickr

I love the fact that my phone can take pictures, it fills the place that was occupied most recently by my Canon G11 and previously by a zone focus / program exposure film compact. It is small, easy to use, has ultra wide, wide and standard lenses and will easily produce an A3 image to hang on the wall or usable HD video. It is a visual pocket note book for me to scribble in. I love your description :- It is a visual pocket note book for me to scribble in.
