Well, I suppose it is true that people use their mobile phones instead of cameras now. Yesterday I went to my elder daughter's First Communion service. There were 51 candidates, no official photographer and no taking photos during the service. Everything was left to individual families to take their own photos, each child was given an opportunity to be photographed with the priests and their various family members. Afterwards there was a small party in the nearby church hall (actually it was a Cathedral).
Of the 51 families with friends, relatives etc, I was the only one with a camera. Everyone else taking photos was using a mobile phone. I was surprised (but not that surprised).

It is more the rise in the use of phones as cameras.
Most people who used to own a camera [think instamatic] weren't interested in the use of the camera at all. What they wanted was a [not very good] picture to stick in the album, destined to fade away into nothing in a few years. Print permanence wasn't exactly a quality objective given the reprint market.

It's simple, innit. Take the picture, add a filter in an app, share with friends/family on FB/WhatsApp, forget. Why bother with the faff of doing it with a camera, transferring the images, probably spending more time in post, before exporting to storage and then attaching to a media post.
We're weird, basically. Photographers that is.

The wife was the photographer and husband a full time job but helped with the sideline wedding tog business. The wedding photography business thrived and the D200 performed brilliantly on Welsh climbs and Wellingborough weddings. I also had, and still have a D200. For a time I was using a 'posh' D300 as an amateur while they still used the D200 for business. I don't know what they use now because I have got out of touch but suspect that I might leap frog them again, very shortly.

Saw Joe Bonamassa last week. Vast majority of those who took video or photos used their phones. I used my wife's Canon G7 for the best shots. I had my Samsung S22 phone, which was pretty good, but the G7 knocked it into a cocked hat when it came to quality comparison. The only problem was I wasn't familiar with the video button on the G7, but eventually found it!

Since getting a Pixel Pro (silly name)phone I have not been frustrated by not carrying my macro lens for the Nikon camera.

I really struggle to take pictures with my phone. No stability. Everything is always wonky. Much prefer the heft of my DSLR in my hands. I'm usually pretty impressed by what people can do with a phone because I rarely manage it!

I really struggle to take pictures with my phone. Same here I once said to someone "I can't take photos with a phone" whilst changing lenses on my DSLR and they looked rather surprised It's a completely different skill set when I use a phone I wonder where the ISO/white balance/ focus options are

I've been tempted to try a Pixel when considering the last couple of "upgrades". The macro camera on my current Samsung doesn't seem much better than having to use the main camera on the previous one.

I'm usually pretty impressed by what people can do with a phone because I rarely manage it! My mobile couldn't even manage a readable barcode for a click & collect recently. Fortunately I'd noted the code as well. My main gripe with phone cameras is a lack of things to play with - can't change lens, aperture, shutter speed... This is made even worse on my phone which has the most basic camera imaginable - go back 10 years & my wifes mobile would have had a better camera. The side benefit of my phone is the battery lasts all week
