I made the mistake of discovering "Night Tracks" on Radio 3 which is keeping me awake after I've gone to bed. Fortunately it's only on Mon to Wed. There has been a roundup on Thu, but that's been replaced by Compline in the run up to Christmas, and I'm not a monk.

The Messiah by the Academy of Ancient Music the Choir of King's Cambridge and (maybe) the Huddersfield Choral Society.
One of the 'cleanest' and least fussy performances I've ever heard. Well worth a listen for those with similar tastes.

I shall listen to it again tonight, as the clarity of singing was remarkable, and I didn't give it sufficient attention.

When I first found 'my' version it was just background music in the car while waiting for my wife. I suddenly 'heard' the clarity of singing and the precision of the orchestra. I was hooked and when I got home played it through better equipment than the car radio. It gave the Messaih a new lease of life for me.

I listened again last night, and did indeed find it an excellent performance, despite being shortened by about 30%. I am still trying to decide if that is a good thing or not!

The David Grisman Quintet - Pneumonia.
David Grisman (given the nickname "Dawg" by Jerry Garcia with whom he used to play) is a seriously virtuoso mandolin player.

Just been listening to Crime of the Century (Supertramp)..... for the first time in a long while. How flippin' good is that album? [if you don't know (and you're of a certain vintage), then do yourself a favour, and listen to it. ]

Yard Act (Warning - there's 'language' involved) My cousin's son is the guitarist and while I may have gone along to the first gig out of a sense of wanting to offer support to a family member (plus I got on the guest list which was a first), I have found myself a fan along with quite a few other folk. In the last year they've played Glastonbury, gone to the USA and appeared on the Jimmy Fallon show, been nomintated for the Mercury prize and their album went to number 2 in the album charts. They've also produced this video featuring the wonderful David Thewlis and recorded a version of it with Elton John. He's still just my cousin's big kid though! www.youtube.com/channel/UC-8rZyq39_FXBBSf4cseehQ

peterba The only song I think I know from that album is dreamer. I'll give it a play. Dreamer is probably the most 'commercial' track on the album (and IIRC was the only one released as a single).
The album brings back 40+ year old memories of sitting around late into the night at parties - having taken on a few bevvies, and reached a state of near-insensibilty.

The album that has the same effect for me is Dark Side of the Moon for similar reasons, again from around 40 years ago. I had a friend at college who had a great house. They had a pool and a sauna and we used to go there, swim in the pool, have a sauna, have a few beers, smoke some weed and listen to that album, lol. Can remember being totally wasted and being woken up by Time!
