Last night in the Bell's I took a shot from my phone that came out rather well and Christina who I took the photo of was so impressed she wants me to do a few shots this Friday.
Well I've been really lax on the photo front I just noticed on the card apart from a few shots the last time I really took my camera out was for a retirement party well over a year ago so a decent photo shoot of an interesting subject sounds fun
Christina's full name is Christina Draguilera and her real name is Scott hence the interesting subject bit
I'm fairly confident about my lenses selection but....
Scott is generously over 6 foot tall and as Christina wears incredibly high heels I'm only 5 1/2 and don't even own a pair of high heels so....
Do I take a stepladder?

Might be a bit awkward setting up a stepladder. Have you considered stilts ? Might be an idea to hold back on the drink .

Actually in all seriousness , you can get small fold up step stools like you'd use in the kitchen to reach stuff of the top shelf . There not very high , but with a smaller footprint than stepladders, it might be safer . Less likely to get pushed over . Or is where your going a sit down show only with no one moving around ?
It seems to me unless you've placed yourself against a wall and are not going to be moving about stepladders might be an issue. Especially if you moving them about clattering about while people are trying to watch and listen to it .
I know it would annoy me if I went to a show and someone was dragging ladders around in front of me .

If I'd paid to watch a show and someone set up their stepladders in front of me , they might have to pick a window ! They might get to choose if it's open or shut before they leave .

If it's at a gig - then definitely no to the stepladder. It's a hazard and you'll just be in the way. If you know the location, have a look around for an area that is raised* if you really really need it. Otherwise, just take photographs as you normally would. * Not on chairs or tables.

A lot depends on the venue. I have used low steps in the corner of a room and shot diagonally across the room above the heads of people at presentations. These events are fairly formal and everything is planned, approved and set up in advance. Steps being used casually and being moved around is a no no. Slightly off topic but still relevant. Does the room have a fairly high white ceiling? If so then bounce flash may be helpful. If you do use flash in this way try some test shots before the real thing. You might need to use a gell to avoid mixed colour casts and you will need to adjust flash balance.

I was half joking about the stepladder if Christine wants a close up he's going to have to sit down and I can get standing shots by standing back and using the zoom a bit or by sitting down and aiming the camera up a bit that's how I got the shot from my phone in the first place
I want to avoid using the flash because it's going to annoy people so I'll use my gig lens (DX 17-55 f2.8) because I've shot in near darkness with ISO 100 and still had to turn the exposure compensation down with no flash

Wow. 17-55 f2.8. I thought that you were quite hard up from what you have told us. No pressure but if you mess up with that then there are no excuses.

I have a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 - it wasn't particularly expensive.

I have a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 - it wasn't particularly expensive. I have a Sony A mount 16-50mm f/2.8 that I think cost less than £150 and a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 in Canon EF mount ( the non stabilised one) for my 60d that I think cost me less than about £70 , both pre owned . I might have even swapped some unused lenses for that one at LCE , so sort of free really . So they are affordable unless you insist on the newest and greatest .
