"Harsh reality. How to get great photos in hard summer sunlight. "That's a brilliant title as Storm Antoni sweeps across the country.

AP's Facebook site came up as a suggestion in my timeline. One of the posts had a link to a survey, so for giggles I filled it out. It's obvious from the questions that they don't expect people from outside Britain to be replying.

"Harsh reality. How to get great photos in hard summer sunlight. "That's a brilliant title as Storm Antoni sweeps across the country. I got a bit fed up with the article and started skimming after a paragraph but my take-away was that the key advice given was i) For good results make sure that the sun is behind you. Well done that man ii) For good results buy a Leica Monochrom. That's almost as good as last week (unless I read it somewhere else - in which case very sorry to misattribute, AP) someone determining that with care he could emulate the results from his Leica Monochrom using Ilford Delta 400, an observation that seems perverse in the extreme.

At the beginning of the article on Budget Macro work the other week was a little sidebar that reckoned the best budget macro lens was some Canon model at about £1,000. I'm sure it's a fine lens, but 'budget'?

I was amused to spot that the Spitfire on page 42 turned up in one of my regular other magazines* on Friday.
The other one is presumably a fibreglass replica.
There's a nice Werramatic in there too.
*You. Yes, you, you grubby git. Stop sniggering at the back.

I look out for it if I'm in the local supermarket but only buy it if I think there's something of real interest. It's not cheap so I have to feel I'm getting value out of it and more often than not I don't think that's the case.

I'm sure it's a fine lens, but 'budget'? Nikon Z users face about the same cost for a native 105mm macro. However the old F mount lens is available second hand for around £300 in very good to excellent condition. I have one of the latter and it works better on the FTZ and Z camera than it ever did on a D500. Brand new they cost around £800. I am not in a hurry to buy the new lens although the quality is very slightly better.

I'm sure it's a fine lens, but 'budget'? If you have a budget of £1000 , then yes , that is a lens that meets that budget. If you have a budget of £200 , then your SOOL ! It's all a matter of perspective.

Regards the original topic , I've been buying AP for about twenty years , every week. Originally from my local Newsagent or Tesco, then when they frequently didn't have any I started a subscription. This last year or so I've had a backlog of issues to read , and as most issues seem to be the same repeated subjects, I lack the motivation to catch up. I'll take a stack of them with me when I set off on tour of in my campervan to while away the evenings , but I've decided I'm going to cancel my subscription.
I could always keep some old ones in the van to read while I'm away as they'll be so familiar it'll just be like reading the latest edition with a rehashed subject!

A digital edition is available for about £80Stirling for fifty one issues. There isn't enough in the magazine for me to want a subscription - and the subscription rate it offers me is monthly. This works out to £96 a year...and the website doesn't offer me the option to pay in $NZ!
