It's funny, my first two weeks on Instagram, no ads whatsoever. Then once they thought I'm hooked, wham!

I use Firefox which uses things called “container tabs” which, as the name suggests, contain web sites in their own tab and prevent, say, Facebook, from seeing what I browse elsewhere. It seem to work, adverts are pretty random.

I know, but it doesn't explain why I get 1/10th of the adverts others do. I may have been exaggerating. But no-one exaggerates on the internet...

That's tracking - if you accept customised cookies then they pick up on everything you search for and customise the adds you get. So how did it know one of my customers was telling me this afternoon she has taken up paddle boarding then Facebook showed me some posts about it? Hopefully it was just a coincidence and it was just testing if I reacted to some different content. It seems to track any words typed...I mentioned a bike brand in a reply to someone and ever since posts from a group for that brand have been showing up. You probably need to look at your security settings. I suspect the new AI assistants can and do actually "read' what you are typing and are able to handshake with trackers to "improve the user experience". I've got Siri turned as off as I can get it on my mac and compilot (or whatever it is called) on my windows PC turned off. For what I was reading about Windows 11 being built around compilot it seems that privacy is hard to protect. I can't imagine being able to work on a confidential document in Word for example and guarantee that the contents aren't being hoovered up. Although I am still using Windows 10 I was really worried when the latest version of Word started suggesting whole next words to me on the basis of the first letter typed - particularly when the word in my mind was appearing before me. I turned the typing suggestions off because they were too off putting but I still feel concern that when I write something it is not just me and the screen. I've worked on some sensitive stuff in my time and this scares me more than a bit. I guess corporations with their own office versions can control this - but if I as a consultant working under a secrecy agreement am using the normal software how can I know it remains private ?

Disconnect from the internet, and stay that way. Which is in itself limiting in other ways.

I don't do Facebook, don't do twitter, don't do Instagram, don't do x etc , etc . So much less crap anyway !

Surprised AP is still going. Last time I looked it was just a lot of guff about smartphones, wall to wall adverts and done to death beginner's guides. Maybe they know what sells but offers very little for many photographers

Surprised AP is still going. Last time I looked it was just a lot of guff about smartphones, wall to wall adverts and done to death beginner's guides. Maybe they know what sells but offers very little for many photographers I recently seriously considered stopping my subscription when the quarterly direct debit was increased from £25.50 to £36.06 (from £2.00 to £2.75 per issue), especially since AP sometimes appears to be changing to 'What Startphone' or 'Photography For The Very Wealthy'. Then something interesting manages slips past (or fills a space left available because there is no new Sony mirrorless marvel to review), and I enjoy reading it. Certainly I would never buy any issue at its cover price. Regarding 'wall to wall adverts': are you old enough to remember what AP was like 50 years ago? Sometimes the editorial pages were difficult to find amidst all the ads.
Also, the illiteracy of some of its contributors continues to annoy.

I bought one for the first time in a while a few weeks back . It's the one with another film special that's the same as the other film specials . What caught my eye was the article on the Nikon F100 , while I'm mainly a Minolta man , then Canon , I also have some Nikon stuff including the F100 , but as I flicked threw it I spotted a picture I recognised that a friend had taken , so I bought it to pass onto him after I've read it . (Still not had chance )

I've cancelled my subscription, there's so little of interest in the magazine now that I only read a few regulars.

Can't remember the last time I even looked at AP let alone bought one... I bought a few during the height of Covid restrictions. The only ones I've bought since were a handful in a local charity shop for 10p each a couple of months ago.

Slightly off-topic....
A few years back I subscribed to Amateur Photographer and N-Photo Magazine [ an independent magazine aimed at Nikon shooters ] -
After cancelling I still continued to buy the occasional N-photo then of late I discovered the usual retailers no longer stocked it , in fact I couldn't see any Photo Magazines for sale - so imagine my delight when I spotted an N-Photo on the shelves of Tesco , Inshes , Inverness yesterday afternoon .
After thumbing through it to see what they were covering this month I went to the back page and I couldn't believe what I was reading ...
After 13 years , Issue 168 is to be their last , N-Photo is ceasing to exist .
