Almost. It is basically a "free" copy of Adobe camera raw used either to convert one "raw file" to another "raw file", needing further processing, or to a more TIFF-like linear DNG which still needs a lot of work. I was looking it up the other day. There are some DNG versions (three I think I remember) so you have to convert to a version compatible with the software you will process the DNG with. I don't think this is much of a problem today but there will come a time when old software won't open "the latest" DNG. agree you can avoid opening darktable or silkypix to open a raw file but not that you can avoid processing the file in one form or another. Honestly, the 15 minutes or so it took to convert 180 or so raw files to DNG is a small price to pay to allow me to open the files in Lr 5.7 instead of the den of torture that is those other two packages. And you keep your database/catalogue.

I'm sure . Just beware that, if I understood correctly, at some point, LR 5.7 will only open DNG files compatible with LR 5.7 and not "newer" DNG files. This may mean changing default settings in DNG converter so that it produces an "older" DNG version.

This may mean changing default settings in DNG converter so that it produces an "older" DNG version. That's already the case. It's a simple matter of selecting the appropriate version from a drop-down menu. The version I select is suitable through to Lr 8.x, but there are versions available back to Lr 1.x.

OK, sorry I was telling you something you already knew! LR has changed a lot since 5.7 though. I'm stuck on 11.5 (ACR 14.5) until I upgrade my mac. Later versions require a lot of GPU power and memory to run the AI stuff for masking and heal/clone for removing things. For raw processing, when I was dithering in 2018 about going from LR 6.14 to the annual licensed version of classic, I bought ON1 Photoraw (2018) which seems to have lasted well (although again it won't do later cameras). It is as expensive as a photography plan licence if you upgrade (I've skipped versions 2019,2020,2021,2022 and 2023) and is a meld of LR and PS so from an editing point of view has a lot of capability but no DAM for file organisation (unless they added one - I don't read the imploring personal offers of a good upgrade price).

I'm quite cheerful today. I charged the batteries for my Canon kit yesterday and today took the 5Ds for a walk around Ness botanic gardens. Seems ages since the camera was last used [June last year, I decided to check] . I quite enjoyed myself, even though it was not a good day for garden (or any type of) photography being a grey drizzle day. Makes a change using a DSLR again having been using the X-H2S. The biggest difference is not having to keep turning the darn thing on and off as the Canon goes quickly to sleep and wakes up in a flash compared to mirrorless even though the X-H2S is like greased lightning compared to the other Fuji cameras I own. A pond at Ness. I reckon these will be good for dragonflies later in the year. All a bit bare still. 274A1517.jpg by Pete, on Flickr

Years ago, I wasn't over-impressed with Salewa boots, they seemed to be cheap and nasty. Seems things have improved a lot, the ones you've shown all look great. I've worn Meindl boots (another German brand) for over 20 years now, they're perfect for my foot shape, but bloody expensive. I've worn their walking trainers for the last 10 years, equally great but even dearer for what they are.

I wear them out pretty quick these days so it doesn't seem like such a big decision as it did when I expected the boots to last years. Still not sure I trust synthetic materials to keep my feet as dry as leather though. Only one way to find out!

They've got my atheist science teacher daughter teaching RE in her international school in (predominantly atheist) Korea. Excellent - she can start by pointing out just how much effort the creator went to, with a universe of ten trillion galaxies (Kornreich, 2022), each with an estimated average of one hundred billion stars, all just for lil' ol' us. Allegedly.

One for the Pat Benatar fans. The naming scheme for our pedigree cows is herd name + sire's name + dam's name. Yesterday we had a calf born called Eastknook Glory Gloria.

The USA legal system has more to commend it than I had assumed - obviously they decided they would be crucified if they insisted on going to trial. Also a thorn in the side of the petulant man baby. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-65318654
