I really must get back to reading Sabine Hossenfelder's "Existential Physics" which I started some months ago. Her earlier book "Lost in Maths" was also worth the reading.

I just recently bought a copy of Chris Rainier's beautifully produced and hefty tome, 'Mask' which presents a striking collection of rare masks steeped in ancient tradition, captured through the lens of this celebrated documentary photographer who has been recording indigenous and endangered cultures across six continents over the past 4 decades. This mesmerizing photographic collection of masks -- some of them ancient, many hidden at the edges of the known world have been rarely revealed to outsiders. Traditional masks are often only seen behind glass in museums, divorced from their spiritual significance. However, the masks in this collection are still being used in the dances they were made for today, in countless cultures all over the world.
Chris Rainier has teamed up with the anthropologist Robert L Welshe, who has contributed wa comprehensive array of notes relating to the photographs, which include those of the 1st Nation N American Indians, the fearsome Krampas child-chasers of Eastern Europe, plus also the masks used in Bhutan, Nepal and a number of other countries.
My only niggle about this book's contents would be that whilst the Notes and Index at the back refer to plate numbers, none of these numbers are also present on the actual image pages, which is rather odd!

The transcript of a daily diary kept by a private soldier on the North West Frontier through 1941. It's a bit mawkish but, getting past that, pretty vivid and pretty scary.
It hasn't been published but is being considered for publication.

I finished the book by Dean Koontz. Thank god it was only 99p. What a crap book that was. I have now finished Michael Connelly's "The Dark Hour " a Harry Bosch book. I enjoyed that. Now just about to start "Girl, forgotten" by Karin Slaughter. My kindle battery doesn't last very long anymore which is a bit annoying. Mine started losing power drastically after an upgrade about a year ago. I did the usual things of reducing the backlight to nothing during the day - and gradually removing books I'd read from the device. Still in the library online. Seemed to help, although Ive' got into the habit of now boosting the battery when it reaches the 70% ish mark. Still surviving.

Kate, Is there any practical difference between a Kindle and iPAd or laptop? Mick For me, huge difference as I haven't got the other two. Apart from that, I guess it's the offline reading that I like. I purchase the Kindle books and download them to my Kindle. I do get the odd upgrade notice when accessing a new book and online, but otherwise I'm free from interruptions.

I get that. We were given a kindle a long time ago but haven't used it much. OTOH I read quite a bit on my iPad. I wondered if there was any benefit with the Kindle. If you haven't used the alternatives, then I guess that you wouldn't know.
I stick with the iPAd because it does lots of other things as well as being a reader and I don't want to carry two things with their own chargers! Mick

Mick I have tried on an iPad as well as a different brand of tablet. the kindle is by far the most comfortable to hold in weight and size. My kindle is the Voyage, so is illuminated but in a pleasant way, not bright like an iPad would be.

Mick Big advantage of a Kindle is if you're reading in a bright environment with screen glare - on a beach, say. The lack of reflections make a Kindle a much better bet then. Otherwise, no advantage IMHO.

Mick I use my iPad more than my smart phone or my pc for everything. I do have an old Kindle but since getting the Kindle app for the iPad I have not used the Kindle. I prefer the iPad screen, both size and quality and the app has all the functions I require. Like you I don’t want to carry an extra piece of equipment.

Book Club book was The LIttle Wartime Library by Kate Thompson. I read it in two and half days, not because it was especially brilliant but because it was easy fluff which was all I really felt like reading!

Ready for something a bit more challenging.

Did the bears ever find out who had been sleeping in their porridge?
