Last week there was an article on the BBC news site asking whether we should have to pay for on-line privacy BBC News article. The content was about "consent or pay" websites, that is consent to advertising or pay for the content. There was a suggestion that this might be illegal in the EU, depending on circumstances. My initial reaction was that if a site decides that I must consent to advertising or pay I will very carefully assess the value, to me, of the site and just stop using it. I already do as much as possible to prevent tracking and always reject unnecessary cookies especially "legitimate interest" ones (as far as I am concerned there is no legitimate reason for collecting my data, unless I give you permission).
Apparently the biggest loser is print media, where we already have pay walls, advertising revenue is falling as advertisers go elsewhere. The desire is for targeted advertising, which is of course what many of us want to avoid.
DPReview is now asking for Ad Blockers to be turned off or show an interest in subscribing, I'll be discontinuing my use of the site. Facebook was becoming unusable due to the number of advertisements but there are somewhat fewer now, I'm likely to visit the site less often now. I know that websites need income but most social media sites need us more than we need them, I managed very well without social media for 50 years and I can do so again.
Thoughts anybody.

I wanted to read a news story and the site was accept advertising cookies or pay. I opened the site in my Tor browser, accepted the cookies and read what Ii wanted. After closing the browser down, cookies and everything else is deleted automatically. it doesn't use my own IP or location (in fact the ads on the page were German IIRC so that is where it assumed I was)
Just looked now and I have moved to Egypt!

I was blocked access to my account and received an email telling me I had to go through a security phone call before I could use my account again. These days I use apps on the phone so unlikely to be a problem but it put me off using VPNs.

I don't use VPN's as such, but TOR works that way. I wouldn't use it for anything like banking etc. In fact I rarely use it at all as it does have drawbacks.

The internet attracts free-loaders. If I buy a newspaper or magazine I expect to pay for that content. I also anticipate there to be advertising within the pages. Yet people seem to expect the same editorial on the internet to be free of charge and free of advertising. This forum is, and has been, free of advertising due to the generosity of 4 members.

I agree with you almost completely however, we are all aware of sites and/or advertisements that do things impossible in print, such as obscuring content or floating. I don't mind adverts that I can ignore but when they become insistent I'll leave the site, possibly never to return.
I don't listen to commercial radio and very rarely watch television so I avoid a great deal of advertising.
Thank you to the four generous members.

When I buy a newspaper no-one asks for my personal details so that they can give me a copy with advertising targeted to those details and with the capability of following me around and reporting back to the newsagents on my activities - and selling my details and activity reports to third parties for profit. I have no problem with web sites which tell me that if I do not consent to cookies then I will still get adverts they "just won't be as relevant to me". The price of a newspaper probably just about covers the cost of paper, printing and physical distribution - everything else being funded by old fashioned non targetted advertising.

No problem with ads (which I ignore) but I'll simply not use any site that says agree or pay. Might look into that Tor browser thing.

Facebook was becoming unusable due to the number of advertisements but there are somewhat fewer now, I'm likely to visit the site less often now. I use a plug-in called Facebook Purity to block all the adverts, reals and other crap from Facebook. Works a treat and is free to use www.facebook.com/fluffbustingpurity/

Personally I don’t worry about advertising on websites I can only remember leaving two sites because the were so advert heavy. I believe they were what is termed ‘Click Bait’
Now adverts between card games and online games are a different matter entirely and I have to delete several advertisements between each hand of cards. I often delete games and reinstall from different platforms due to the advert issue.
