I just read a post on another forum that moaned about being charged £270 for three hours work on a dog.
Bearing in mind that a car mechanic might charge more and a doctor, lawyer or even plumber would charge more also. Bearing in mind that two people (Vet and nurse) were attending. Bearing in mind the cost of the surgery and equipment etc
I thought that the charge wasn't excessive.
Any opinions?
Mick
PS An interest - my son is a vet although he doesn't work with small animals.

I avoid vet fees by not having pets...

I avoid vet fees by not having pets... I simply borrow a cat when I feel I need one.

£270 for 3 hours vet work isn't excessive. We pay an extra £30 or so for a half hour consultation when our dog has to see a vet rather than a nurse. If the vet were just doing an examination, then yes it would be excessive, but doing 'work' usually means there are others involved as well, plus material fees etc.
Some fees do seem OTT, but for 3 hours work? nope, seems reasonable enough to me.

It doesn't sound too bad although it could easily be a vet surgery that is owned by an investment company that makes sure they get their cut too.

Good luck trying to find a truly independent small animal practice. They've all been bought out by corporate brands, but keep the old names. Our 3 local vets are called Garston vets, Manor Farm vets, and Harris, Hill, and Gibbons. All are owned by corporate owners; Manor Farm vets ltd, Linnaeus group, and CVS respectively.

Aye, we're supposed to be getting a new independent vet surgery if the rumours are to believed. Word on the street is an experienced and well regarded vet is setting up their own surgery. Here's hoping because I've lost confidence in the one we've been using.

Our local Vet (not the one that charged 270) is proudly independent. Don't know about the others in the area.

It varies a lot.. A neuter, chip, check up, flea treatment and first shots £65 in 2017 A quick examination, a blood test, a pain killing injection then when the blood test results came back, the permanent pain killing injection as it were then communal cremation (complete with a hard sell on shelling out £400 for individual cremation- I made a formal complaint about the comment "You do realise communal cremation means she'll end up in landfill don't you?") £465 in 2010 And that was the same practice!
One of the few joys of finally getting my state pension is I qualify for the PDSA, which is actually my nearest vet

They just live in a different reality.

The £270 for three hours wor by three people don’t seem excessive but some vets prices are unreasonable and meds especially over the counter stuff is often a rip off. We no longer have pets due to the cost involved

Rocky Dog passed away today. He started to suffer pain that couldn't be managed. We put up the Christmas tree and had a friend round - we got him at Christmas, and it was his favourite time of year. He had a belly full of sausages and chicken. Absolutely Heartbroken. Vets and everyone there gave him love and cuddles (and chocolates). We have a Private Pet Cremation man sorting out everything - less than half the price of the vets, and it is individual. Goodbye Rockius Dogius, the best cuddle monster on earth. Rocky, Feb 2010 to November 2024
