I am off to Detroit tomorrow for 4 nights and only taking carry on luggage. We are meeting family on Friday night, have a wedding on Saturday evening, then leave Monday morning, so really only have a couple of days free with no plans, other than hoping we don't get robbed or shot, since Detroit is not exactly known as one of the worlds safest cities, lol.
I can't decide what camera to take. Do I take my Fuji X-T4 with the 18-300 lens (only lens I have for it) my Fuji X100 with a fixed lens at around 50mm equivalent, a Panasonic MFT with a smaller zoom or just stick to my phone and hope I don't regret not having a "real" camera with me?

I'd maybe take the gas mask for the air "quality".

I'd stick to the fixed 50mm, not too big to too heavy - easy to carry around.
It's a "go everywhere" sort of focal length.

X100 and plenty of spare cards. Use a 'new' card for each outing so all your pictures are not lost if the camera is stolen or lost.

Anoher vote for the X100. People will potentially think it's a useless old film camera and leave you be. At least, that has been my experience.

X100 it is then. It's strange isn't it? I have packed my bag. Shorts, undies, socks ,T shirts , a suit carrier with trousers, shirts and a jacket. Took me no time at all, and all I had to decide was my camera. My wife has been at it for hours deciding what to wear for the wedding (although she bought a new dress for it) what to wear for the evening before (although she also bought something new for that too). Then she has to decide on shoes, how many weeks worth of knickers she needs for the 4 days and on it goes. Apparently it is difficult for women, and men and women are different. Great when that thought suits!

Won't you need a wide angle?

Won't you need a wide angle? I take it that a professional/jobbing photographer has been commissioned to do the wedding. I also expect that a phone camera can handle wide angle.

Yeah, my iPhone is a decent wide angle and yes, I assume that they have a photographer. Considering my niece has had "instagram shots" of anything and everything to do with this whole affair from their engagement onwards (in a way that only Americans can) then I dare say she'll have a whole gaggle of the buggers. Months after their engagement, she came to the UK bringing her fiancé who had never left the US before. They even hired a tog in London to take some shots !

I'd say that true, Kath..... most of the time. I've had my x100 since 2011, and during that time I've found - on several occasions - that the idea of it being "only an old film camera" sometimes sparks a conversation with people who are sufficiently interested. You can't win, really. Well yes, I've had some of that too. In fact while we were at Duxford earlier this year a woman was sitting waiting for her husband to come out of the loo and she had the latest iteration in her hand. I said 'Nice camera' and she agreed and said it was her husband's. The man working his shift in the gift shop said it was nice to see someone still using film and we both laughed at the same time. He then came to talk to us for about ten minutes about his film days. He was lovely by the way, but another one fooled by the retro look of the thing.
