I liked the layering effect of the water, the weed and the wall in this one. Moored Up by Nigel Hayes, on Flickr What does the panel think?

I can see what you are thinking but does it need the wall? For me it works in a 9X16 format if you can crop through the dark water, not taking the light weed to the very top of the frame which probably takes it too far from the original idea. I would probably put more structure into the side of the boat and slightly tone down the highlights from the top of the buoy.

The kink in the wall is a distraction, otherwise it works well to me. What Keith says also works, it's one of those images that works on so many levels (no pun intended, for a change!)

Would it work better in colour? For me the mono doesn't offer any real separation of the layers.

Must admit I hadn't really considered a panorama style crop though I might not crop quite a severely as 16:9 - I think I'd take it to the base of the wall(ish), perhaps a revisit is in order. Not sure how much extra structure I could drag from the original though - the 3Mp/superzoom combo kind of limits the detail available. Good point about the highlights - should've spotted those... Did start off processing in colour Zou but didn't really seem to be able to get the graphic effect I was after but maybe I should have another stab at it. Thanks all for your thoughts, it's always useful to get a view from other perspectives.

How about 2.33 : 1 (Cinemascope ratio), concentrating on the boat and reflections?

For me, I would focus (pun intended) more on the DoF. Maybe a larger aperature (f/5.6 or bigger- if possible) would help with the recession in the image and emphasise the layers better, with the focus on the boat(IMHO). Personally, I would try f/4 or even f/2.8. But then again, I am lucky to have fast lenses, and it is my personal style.

I like the photo but, like some others, I found the wall a tad distracting. As most folks know, I like tight crops, but, even I found Chester's ( Chester PB) crop a tad too tight .. so opted to show a slightly looser crop ... Cheers, Jack ...

Thanks for the input Adrian, Jack. Still not really convinced about the tight crop option but it looks like I'm the only one who's happy with the wall, c'est la vie...

I like it, but I'm with the crowd, the wall distracts a bit. I slid the image up on my phone until the wall disappeared and it made a huge difference.
