My default aperture is f8, it seems to work best for most of what I take. However there are occasions when I go wider to blur Foregrounds or backgrounds. So how wide I will leave up to you. I guess the main result might be to create blur, but again I will leave that up to you; content and composition can be anything you like.

I'll also generally set F8 and use aperture priority. I think I've only got two lenses faster than F4, one's not been used for years and the other is a macro. I'll have to trawl through Lightroom and see what I can find. My first thought "to look" turned out to be taken at F8. This one surprised me - F5.6 @ 150 mm - as wide open as this lens gets - it is more or less opposite the criterion to lose foreground and background - I was surprised at the compression and progression of focus achieved. This is more on theme. I looked at F2.8 for the 70-200 F2.8 and this is F2.8 at 200 mm with the intent to throw out of focus the chain-link fence in the foreground. Exactly what this is taken through can be seen in the background because the fence there stays, unfortunately in focus. Dates from 2014. Through a mesh fence, thrown out of focus. Another one with 70-200 F2.8 at F2.8 and 200 mm. Cropped. I revisited it to show the progression of focus. Unfortunately the subject isn't pin sharp, I obviously "missed" focussing on it by a little bit. Back in November 2014. Canon 1D iv. BV9R0196-Enhanced-NR.jpg by Pete, on Flickr

Sometimes it has to be taken at a wide aperture, when its very low light and you are using a film camera. Pool #2 by Keith Hudson, on Flickr
