I'll endeavour to upload a bunch to Flickr so I can link them. But maybe this challenge format isn't working for us? I think that I am too much of a butterfly as I flit around snapping what I see. The closest I have got to the format has been recording my local area over the years or an organised year in Dulwich Park which was also a failure.

When we were in Newcastle for the day I tried to photograph the bridges from less obvious angles, perhaps interesting as a set but hardly a long term project.

Perhaps better in the winter? Fewer distractions and things to do? You mean it isn't winter now? It's cold, wet, windy and miserable - but it's still 9pm before I switch a light on - so it must be summer.

These are from the project I was really meant to be working on...but they are far from being a documentary yet - much more work to do. I am working with two local charities on a project which we hope will see funding for a local Volunteer Coordinator as well as funding for a Creative Photographic Project documenting and celebrating volunteers in Helensburgh & Lomond. These were taken to display at our second Volunteer Celebration Lunch to help get local organisations on board for the project. It came about because we felt it was unfair that the Volunteer of the Year award only went to one person, and that this didn't necessarily reward those who didn't volunteer with an organisation - informal volunteers may as well be invisible. So last year we invited anyone who volunteered for anyone to come along for a free lunch and asked the poeple they volunteered for to speak about why they valued their volunteer/s so much. It was a great success and we repeated it this year with even more volunteers being recognised and thanked. Our ultimate goal is to have a one stop shop for volunteering where we can match people's skills and ambitions and desires to available volunteer positions, to have volunteering in our area recognised, valued and celebrated, to widen the opportunities and increase collaboration between organisations. The first images here will form part of an exhibition that we hope local shops and cafes will host. They won't be presented quite like this - each formal portrait will be accompanied by shots of the volunteer performing their roles. There will be an initial static exhibition and a rolling exhibition around town which will be updated throughout the year. The second batch of shots were from June's lunch. 240524-Helensburgh And Lomond Volunteers Hub David-001 by Kath Polley, on Flickr Helensburgh And Lomond Volunteers Hub Bonnie-001 by Kath Polley, on Flickr Helensburgh And Lomond Volunteers Hub Eileen-001 by Kath Polley, on Flickr 240524-H&L Volunteers Jennifer-001 by Kath Polley, on Flickr Helensburgh And Lomond Volunteers Hub Alan-001 by Kath Polley, on Flickr 240609-Volunteer Celebration Lunch-014_1 by Kath Polley, on Flickr 240609-Volunteer Celebration Lunch-029_1 by Kath Polley, on Flickr 240609-Volunteer Celebration Lunch-051_1 by Kath Polley, on Flickr 240609-Volunteer Celebration Lunch-084 by Kath Polley, on Flickr 240609-Volunteer Celebration Lunch-053_1 by Kath Polley, on Flickr

And finally...another one that is really an ongoing documentary, to which for various reasons, I didn't contribute much during these last three months - Jean's Bothy. This is our local Mental Health & Wellbeing Hub where I faciliate the photography programme, in addition to being a member of the hub. I don't talk about it too much I hope, but I am prone to deeply depressive episodes which are sometimes utterly overwhelming and which have twice led me to try to end my life. I'm not saying that Jean's Bothy is a cure-all, nor am I suggesting that it will 'fix' mental illnesses, but it can provide a sense of community, safety, friendship and hope for a wide number of people. It can help you get out of your head for a while, it can give you a sense of routine and purpose and you can learn new skills. Most of the activities that take place are during my work hours so I'm limited in what I can document and take part in but I try to get around and see as much of what goes on as possible. 240601-Jean's Bothy Sign by Kath Polley, on Flickr The new gate to the Bothy, designed and created by Dave, one of our members. 240601-Jean's Bothy Archie Gardening by Kath Polley, on Flickr The Bothy is actually an old bungalow in town. Here you can see Archie volunteering his time to cut the hedges. 240420-Jayne-001 by Kath Polley, on Flickr Jayne is a long time member of the Bothy. She sings, writes, takes photographs and also cuts my hair. 240529-Beth-Cyanotypes-001 by Kath Polley, on Flickr We had an On Location Day in the local park where I met Beth for the first time. She signed up for my Cyanotypes activity where we made images using plant material from the park, washing the cyanotpyes in the water from the park's stream. 240529-Bothy Hermitage Cyanotypes by Kath Polley, on Flickr Some of the group's cyanotypes. 240531-Bothy LJ Loch Lomond-001 by Kath Polley, on Flickr LJ listening to Scottish nature writer, Jim Crumley read from one of his books as we cruised around Loch Lomond on a glorious afternoon. _P9A0059 by Kath Polley, on Flickr LJ, Arthur and Katrina enjoying a very swanky lunch at Café Party in Jupiter Artland near Edinburgh. We had money leftover from The Scottish Recovery Network who funded our participation in the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival last year and it seemed appropriate to take members to the sculpture park where they could see work by the likes of Tracey Emin, Christine Borland, Nathan Coley, Andy Goldsworthy and Christian Boltanski among others.

There is a supposedly Voluntary Services office in town, here. I can honestly say I've never seen evidence of their voluntary service, nor anything online nor any offers of assistance advertised anywhere. There have been times I could have done with help. Fortunately I have a good next door neighbour (and her son when he is home), and a neighbour round the corner who cuts my hedge now (my arms have given up). The neighbour across from him dashes out if he sees me passing with my shopping and carries it the rest of the way. I don't know if you find the same in Helensburgh, in that the ones needing help in some way, are the ones reluctant to ask for it. I think your tea event was a lovely idea and should be copied here too! Or maybe I've got the wrong end of the stick? A bit like the Befriending initiative here. They held an open evening in town, but when I wentr to it, no-one spoke to me, and they were just looking for volunteer Befrienders! Oh well.

I'll endeavour to upload a bunch to Flickr so I can link them. But maybe this challenge format isn't working for us? My problem was that I didn't start a project just for this...I was lazy and figured I'd just keep taking shots for projects I'm already working on...but I'm not even close to being done with them so there really isn't a 'conclusion' to any of what I contributed here. I do like the idea of a longer form project. Perhaps the fault was mine for being quite vague and saying 'documentary'. Perhaps we need more specificity?

I wish you the very best of luck. There is a supposedly Voluntary Services office in town, here. They held an open evening in town, but when I wentr to it, no-one spoke to me, and they were just looking for volunteer Befrienders! Oh well. Well we have a branch of TSI (Third Sector Interface) and part of their role is supposed to be matching would-be volunteers with organisations and/or people who need someone to help them, but their remit is the whole of Argyll & Bute so you can imagine that it's not that useful for our little bit of that. If you google for volunteering opportunities round here, computers tend to work with physical distance and a lot of the opportunities that are within about three miles of Helensburgh and Lomond are on the other side of the Clyde! Not very useful. We want to focus our efforts on Helensburgh and Lomond and provide local, community support. The two charities I'm working with are Visiting Friends which would be our befriending service, and the Community Hub. The portraits I took are of three befrienders and two volunteers at the Hub's Bookshop. But we are also working to get recognition for those people who dash across the road to help with the shopping or who will cut the hedge for someone who can't manage it. They are, if anything, even more important!
