Emailed one of my best students who happens to have a (very) lazy eye that I’d keep my fingers crossed that someone could fix her plumbing issues at home today…and my toes, but maybe not my eyes. Hit send and then realised what I’d done. OUtlook says it can’t recall the message. Bugger.

Contrary to what the far right would have you believe, people rarely get offended and I suspect your student had a good chuckle about it. Yesterday I took Julie for her physio and we bumped into one of her work colleagues. She asked me if I was doing all the cooking and then turned to Julie and said "poor you". I knew she was referring to Julie's slow healing and roared with laughter as she spluttered her apology..

I've sent an apology, acknowledging that it was really tactless of me. Me and my big feet.

Many years ago the software house I worked for had various quality procedures each of which had to have an owner. When they appointed a Contracts Manager (me) someone allocated CTR01 to me. It was in fact a procedure for Sales to hand over responsibility for an implementation to Client Management after the relevant contract had been signed. After three attempts Quality eventually got the message that I was neither going to update or re-sign off the procedure and re-allocated it. Pleased with having some good news a Quality bod phoned me up and said "congratulaions, you have finally lost it". She was dreadfully embarassed when I told her that most people reckoned that I had lost it years ago.

I used to write procedures but one I was working on before I retired apparently still hasn't been finished.

I'm sure you won't have caused offence.

I'm sure she knows that I would never be making fun of her or laughing at her. I am actually full of admiration for someone who shows great tenacity and commitment compared to a lot of people who have none of her obstacles in life and simply can't be arsed.

I think Kath that you are being too sensitive. If I made a faux pas like that I wouldn't even recognise that I had done it.

Dave was born without either ulnar so he had a thumb at the end of his right hand and a thumb and an index finger on his left. He found the time when he was doing something and someone said "Let me lend you a hand" hilarious

I had a student who had five fingers and thumb on both hands. It wasn't obvious but something didn't seem normal. All fingers and thumbs were highly functional. I thought it a genetic advantage. His manipulation of physics apparatus was, hopefully still, quite remarkable.

Rings a bell about a documentary I saw quite a while back about a south American extended family (Amazon?) where polydactyly was common, one girl was playing the piano with great dexterity. I think those with only the normal number of fingers were pitied. I could see an advantage in having 5 fingers with an opposable thumb at each end
