A lot of them are really easy to unlock (once you know the technique - which I'm not going to share here) We get loads of bikes handed into the shop with old locks stored on them. The newer, chunkier combination ones like the one in the picture are not as easy to decode without tools as the ones that were around when I was a lad. They don't have the same side to side play. Piece of cake to cut the cable with bolt cutters though. The lock picking lawyer tends to use a simple hook tool between the dials to help decode them

It's not as if doing each number in turn takes all that long though.

It's not as if doing each number in turn takes all that long though. In less than 7 minutes I had my bike stolen parked on a main road with two locks on. I reported to the police including serial number colour ( very distinctive green)(plus new even more distinctive green mudguards) I tracked it down, more by accident than detective work, reported it to the police who told me to go away, the guy probably bought it in good faith. Unfortunately I was too honest to try and steal it back.

Perhaps I should have added a Covert Instruments notch decoder to the list of tools we needed at the bike shop. Apparently got 3 big boxes of new tools to open on Saturday Anyway, this is one of the bike locks I've had for yonks... I know he likes to, quite deservedly, take the mickey out of Master Lock products but I think that one takes some very specialised knowledge or some serious power tools. The one I use most days these days is an Abus armoured cable lock because it is easy to carry round my neck and the key is fast and easy to use even with cold hands. A combination lock is far slower and a coil one like in Nigel's rather pleasing image, far more awkward to carry.
