I have removed the shutter from the donor Kiev. I now need to clean it up, and lubricate it.

I removed the 3 light shields from the shutter, and cleaned the various gears and escapements with an artist's paintbrush dipped in white spirit. I blew the solvent out of the gears with an airbed pump. I'll now wait for the last of the solvent to evaporate, before I lubricate the shutter.

It looks disturbingly like a washboard. Do you know any skiffle?

I'm more concerned about that rust on the wheels. I might have to tickle them up with a wire brush, and then flush this out again.

The oiling set up - for the pivots on the shutter and escapements. I'll also put a trace of moly grease on the gears in the winding system.

Well, I have finally dismantled the Contax II, and fitted the Kiev shutter. Considering that the Contax was made in Germany in 1937, and the Kiev in Ukraine in 1971, it went surprisingly well. The shutter fitted, with a little persuasion, and it works - for the top 3 speeds only.

That's three speeds more than it had before, John, I'd call that a win.

The two shutters, Contax above, Kiev below. You can see, the Kiev has a wire for flash synch (I cut this off). The masking tape at the top right of the Kiev shutter stops the top roller shaft from dropping out.

Well, I have hit a serious snag. The Kiev shutter does not fit the Contax body. The picture above shows where the wind knob attaches to the shutter - the plate on top is not parallel to the camera top. This puts the wind knob at an angle, and it touches the speed bezel (which goes around the plate).

Sounds like the moment for percussive maintenance!
