Very rarely use one it the summer months, but in the winter it's got dark before our photographic workshop meets, so I end up using one quite a lot. I don't think any of these would have been possible without a tripod: Wire spinning at dusk by Mike Kanssen, on Flickr 2nd curtain pool by Mike Kanssen, on Flickr ghostly photographers by Mike Kanssen, on Flickr Digiscoping is somewhere else where I prefer to use a tripod, but I've found out I can sometimes manage without by simply tucking my newtonian scope under my arm or on my shoulder - this approach might need some care as it could easily be mistaken for a bazooka!

I've owned various tripods over the years but always balked at paying too much, so ended up with tripods that were inconvenient (too heavy/bulky) and were left in the boot of the car. In the summer I traded in a bunch of stuff with Ffordes and bought a Benro Tortoise 24C, which is light enough but also folds down to a reasonable size (mainly because it has no centre column). This means it is much more likely to be out and about with me and has had more use already than any of its predecessors.

I can count the number of occasions I have used a tripod on the toes of three legs.....

I use one all the time in the studio but very rarely when out and about with a dslr. I would have to have one for my view camera tho.

I suppose that someone should have expressed the opinion that a bad tripod is probably worse than no tripod.

I suppose that someone should have expressed the opinion that a bad tripod is probably worse than no tripod. Mick I bought a bad tripod once, knowing it was going to be bad, too. We had gone to New England, I had forgotten to pack a tripod, and realised I needed one. Only thing I could find cost $25 and was pretty dreadful - did a job without the center column (well it was American) extended, in still conditions - a slight breeze set it wobbling. Gave it to a Thrift Shop at the end of the trip. Oh, and it was Sales Tax Free weekend in Massachusetts, so cost me a couple of dollars less than it might have - it actually cost the price on the ticket. It actually was just about better than nothing, but probably wouldn't have been had I tried to use it at full height, or in less than ideal conditions. Didn't fancy planting it in rivers, which was one of the things I had been planning to do. One good thing about it - I still use the tripod bag it came with for my Gitzo Traveller the best part of 20 years later, and nobody ever looks twice at the bag.

Will bring a tripod when the day is wholly dedicated to photography, but those tend to be "luxury" days, not normal carry. Son and I have one of those dedicated days planned for Mt. St. Helens this coming Spring, assuming we can reach desired vistas with a 4-wheeler, so will also bring the more high-res camera to reach for golden ticket photos. As for normal carry, seeking to reduce to a true pocket camera, but that's another topic...

I think you must have forgotten - I've had one for yonks. It was bought when I had a darkroom at home. Currently it's mainly decorative because I find loading the sheet film into my dev tank just about impossible in a bag. I've wasted so much with my cackhandedness it made me stop using it. Hopefully this will be the year that I get the necessary blackout materials for the kitchen so that I can do some D&P again.

Seems to be lots of options non of which are as good as clipped to a wire frame in a deep tank - oh for access to my old college darkrooms. People seem to have luck with the old Paterson orbital processors which were around in the 80's for home colour print processing then there is the mini daylight loading deeptanks, I had one of those it was very easy to load but did need a lot of chemicals so not good for one shot. I can't even remember the maker of the one I had to point yu in the right direction on Ebay.

Is your changing bag large enough to put a frame inside to hold it in position/prevent the to of the bag pushing down on your hands? I'm thinking about fashioning something from wire coat hangers etc. as that's a nuisance for me at times.

I mean theoretically yes. And that would make a difference.
