The photography club that I run has asked for this month's theme to be food (or 'scran' as they've termed it?!). I'm trying to come up with some examples by other photographers to stretch the theme away from just instagram shots of coffees and I remembered that there had been a famous photographer who did a series on his rotting compost bin. I can't remember who it was. Anyone have any ideas? They were really rather beautiful shots as I recall but I have no recollection of the photographer. While searching, I came across this: i2-prod.walesonline.co.uk/incoming/article22016398.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/0_263387943.jpgI mean, first...you can still hear the rumbling wheels of the bandwagon and second, this looks like something you'd see from a second rate HNC student thinking they were being 'conceptual'. I can't remember who did the fag end stubbed out in the remains of a fried breakfast, some time in the mid 1980's. I only remember it because one of the guys at Polly emulated it to the point of flogging a dead horse.
I only mention it as a different twist on food waste.

The reflection of the fruit is different to the fruit (strawberry bottom left sticks out in the main image but not on the reflection). Only a small thing but quite annoying. |

You could probably get quite a lot of photos of unopened packets, tins and packaging of out of date food. Rotten food. Discarded take-aways. The back of restaurants probably have large waste bins.

As soon as Keith mentioned it, it rang a bell but on googling there are a quite a few similar images with cigs in fried eggs. |

You won't find one to photograph these days, and it is the wrong time of year anyway, but I remember (50+ years ago) the open pig bins where the canteen emptied their food waste. They would make a lively subject in hot weather, of course, today, we don't get the flies we used to then.

Was a Vogue shot - pink lipsticked cigarette in a fried egg. Works for our theme one way or another. |

Actually you have just reminded me that our local Co-Op and Morrisons often donate just gone out of date food to Jean's Bothy. Some of the photo club members are also Bothy members...might make an interesting series to see what is donated each week. |

My work explores the relationship between Critical theory and food waste ethics. With influences as diverse as Camus and Frida Kahlo, new variations are distilled from both orderly and random meanings. Ever since I was a student I have been fascinated by the theoretical limits of the moment. What starts out as yearning soon becomes finessed into a cacophony of distress, leaving only a sense of unreality and the dawn of a new synthesis. As spatial derivatives become distorted through studious and repetitive practice, the viewer is left with a clue to the edges of our existence. Courtesy of Arty Bollocks. I think it will do nicely. |

Although pigs will eat anything, feed has to be of a certain quality. After a few days in the sun the waste was mostly maggots by weight. Very lively. |

Thankfully I am unaware of any such 'pig bins' in my locale! I believe they are illegal now. Although pigs will eat anything, feed has to be of a certain quality. After a few days in the sun the waste was mostly maggots by weight. Very lively. Summer 1990 I was living near Newbury when my dad passed away up here in Cheshire. I left Newbury having emptied the fridge of chicken pieces (was going to BBQ) straight into a wheelie bin and travelled home. Imagine what my bin was like when I returned home a week or so later. I can smell it now! |
