I'm with Kate. To base the answer on an increasing difference and then offer an answer with zero difference seems illogical.
I like the prime answer but wonder if that's within the scope of a 10 year old.
The 'different base answer definitely isn't for a 10 year old.
I thought 16 simply because it's the only answer that is an increase.

That's smart! Worthy of 'only connect'.

That's smart! Worthy of 'only connect'. Mick But is it right...just because it fits doesn't mean it's the answer being looked for...

I have no idea. Will see the guru tomorrow.
I don't have an answer sheet.

If 14 isn't a typo, then +2, +2, +4, +4, -4, -4 -2, -2 So 10 S My wife said something similar. There are a number of options potentially available. Could also be 16 as the sequence of +2+2 +4 +4 then back to +2 and so forth. The question has only asked for the next number, not numbers. Basically it would be, hence the word sensible, for the child to give their reasoning only as opposed to a singular correct answer. That's how I got 16.

I like the TFS because the test was labelled 'Verbal Reasoning' - something I'd missed until spinno came up with his answer. . There's no chance of showing working or logic. One makes a black mark on the answer sheet and it gets marked by machine.

It would have helped if we had been told it was a verbal reasoning test and not a mathematics question.

What's the answer to this, please? I think that I know, but don't know why. I'm missing something obvious but I've 'gone blind'.
It was in my 10 year old grandson's homework.
What number continues this series in the most sensible way?
2,4,6,10,14,?
The possible answers are 8,12,16,14,10
Mick
The patten I see is increase by 2 twice, increase by 4 twice, so the next would presumably be an increase by 6 (then another)... Which makes 16 next.
