My first live encounter with the Pogues was at the Brunel Rooms in Swindon, before the drugs addled McGowan and Phillip Chevron ruined the band dynamic.

I never got to see them for one reason or another.
I may have told this story before. In the late 80's/early 90's The Pogues were headlining Reading Rock festival. At the time I was based at Reading. A friend who was in The Met was in possession of a Fail to Appear Warrant for Shane McGowan (drug possession). It was a bail warrant so he would have been bailed, so a quick in and out of police custody job. My mate faxed me over the warrant and I started making enquiries to find out where they were staying and/or to find his management company to arrange to serve the warrant.
During this period I got the curly finger from the Area Commander so I went to his office. Word had got out that I was aiming to arrest McGowan. I was told that I wouldn't be arresting him and WTF was I playing at trying to detain the lead singer of a headlining band, did I want to cause a riot etc?
I told him it was a bail warrant so he would be released long before the show so no worries. What if for some reason he doesn't get bail, if he fails to give a suitable address/has more drugs in his possession..... etc.
Seemed daft at the time but a bit of experience and age changed my mind. It would have been a daft thing for such a minor thing. I guess the commander knew I was only doing it so I could say I had, which is true of course, lol.
I might play Rum Sodomy and the Lash too. Great album.

Some time ago I watched half the documentary "A few rounds with Shane Macgowan". Had to take a break as it was quite harrowing and I eventually deleted it without watching the rest of it.
Presumably it will be on tv again soon. Powerfull stuff but well worth giving it a go.

Got that on whilst I type this. I never met him, but we had several mutual friends who always said what a fantastic guy he was. I'm glad to see that he made it home from hospital to be with his family btw - it's MacGowan, not McGowan |

Tangentially, many years ago SWMBO and I had a long chat in The Parks on Oxford worth a chap who had, as an art project, built a radio telescope from stuff found in the university's skips, and was busy printing off white noise from the universe. I'm not sure we got why, but he was a good chap to talk to and we spent quite a while chatting the fat.
It was probably 4-5 years later when I was reading said university's in house magazine when I read that one year the physics department had had an artist in residence who'd had a radio telescope in the Parks for the summer. His name was Jem Finer, ex of the Pogues, and Co- writer of FoNY. There was a loud crash as my jaw hit the floor.
I think that's probably the coolest person I've ever met in Oxford.

(Anne Scanlon’s sister) In fact I have just had a look at her instagram page. She commented when she posted it a few years ago that when she took his photo she didn’t expect him to see 40! |
