Screws, e-clips, washers, focus screens, eyepiece lenses, prisms, mirrors... I obtain non working cameras, and pillage them for parts. It may be worth keeping some cameras whole, and just remove parts as you need them. I bought an auction lot of discards from a camera shop, and today I stripped one down - a Ricoh. Here you see the mirror box, with the shutter and electronics attached to it. I'll keep the mirror, but the rest will go in the bin. The shutter blinds had been bent by something pushed into them. I don't try to repair cameras with as much electronics as this one - I prefer older, mechanical ones.

That last photo resembles my attempt at changing the screen on a Canon G9, just a briefly entertaining diversion on the way to the bin.

One of the main reasons was that I wasn't allowed anywhere near a soldering iron, particularly after I nearly set fire to a plastic table cloth and the formica topped table it was protecting.

"Nearly" or actually? If the former you should have been given a second chance...

Remind me again, John, you say that my Retinettes are more complex than your SLRs...
I have a bit of a flaw in that if I buy something for spares I end up having to try to fix that as well. Currently I'm hoping that a compatriot of John's with a name reminiscent of Robin Hood's forest will come across the same issue in the videos he is making that I have, in that the main spring just doesn't turn quote far enough to cock the shutter. Funnily enough this is a camera I bought for spares for another...
Chris uses somewhere called, I think, AIExpress for generic small screws and the like. I may have to get a set of vernier calipers and measure up the grub screws I need to sort out another Retinette (no-one here got one ducked beyond redemption, I guess?)...

Here is the screw and other small part department - more than 20 years worth of accumulation. Old lenses are a good source of grub screws.

I did briefly wonder why you had some cricket spikes in the middle...
That's quite a collection! Someone has sent me the carcass of a Retina 1BS, which has provided one screw I needed, but not the grub screws...

Grub screws are readily available on other sites too, and cheap. Digital calipers are cheap too, and apparently very accurate.....and this guy takes some apart to show us why.... Keep meaning to upgrade my old fashioned ones. Maybe I should tell Santa

Polar Bear Camera have grub screws, and all sorts of other parts.

Ooooooh! That is possibly the most pornographic thing I've been sent in years! I have so got the tool horn reading that.
Thank you John, calipers look like being my birthday present to me and as Retinettes were made in Germany I bet they are metric threads.

I have seen something else that uses a similar arrangement but I can’t remember what.

The remains of a Minolta XG 1, a Ricoh KR30, and a Ricoh drive. The other parts went in the bin.

So after nearly setting the house on fire with just warm metal , they trusted you with a chemistry set !? Did you learn how to make things blow up or produce flammable gasses ? There's a lot worse you could do with a chemistry set as you get more adventurous! I bought my godson a chemistry set for his tenth birthday a few years back ( he's dad's a chemist working in a drugs research lab , hence the interest) the first thing we did was to make something explode , then we made some hydrogen gas and bubbled it through washing up liquid that we set on fire whilst holding it. And so on . I'm convinced the plastic flowers were already a bit melted before we started , but we both got told off when the lads mum got home ....naturally we both denied it , but she didn't believe us !
