I need to find a source of suitable ribbon - I'll be hitting haberdashery shops with a small sample and my calipers. It has to be 3mm wide by 0.25mm thick, and non stretchy. Alternatively, I need a Kiev shutter...

The Contax arrived. Apart from the broken shutter ribbons, it's not bad. The rangefinder is clean and accurate, the lens is clean. It has zeiss bumps on the back, though, and a strip of leather missing at the top of the body. I have some ribbon which may suffice for the shutter, and I have been copying as many technical details on shutter overhauls as I can find.

I removed the film gate, to get a look at the shutter. It was obvious that someone had been here before - screws were in the wrong holes, and one was missing (it dropped out of the mechanism). The gears look clean, and slightly oily. The behaviour of the upper shutter curtain suggests that there is more wrong here than broken ribbons - it moves up and down over the film gate after cocking, if shutter speeds are changed. I found the cause of the broken ribbons - they were incorrectly installed. The lower shutter curtain is supposed to be able to move on the ribbons, but on this camera it was locked in place. This is the top of the lower curtain. The ribbon is supposed to go over the yellow arrowed bar, and under the one with the red arrow. To the left of the red arrow the metal has been polished by moving over a previous correctly installed ribbon. I will have to go looking for ribbon - the one I have is too wide.

I found a ribbon - it's poly satin, made by a British company called Berisfords. It's 3mm wide, and 0.26mm thick. There were three colours available - flouro green, red and pearl. The only question is whether the surface will give the correct friction - this controls the speed of the second shutter curtain. According to Rick Oleson, the required ribbon has to be less than 3.3mm wide, and between 0.25 and 0.3mm thick. The shop I visited had a range of ribbons claiming to be 3mm, but when I checked them they were 1/8", and too wide. The Berisfords ribbons were the only ones actually 3mm.
