More thoughts on this, the Xpan had a 24x58mm format with 30mm been the widest lens available, which gives a horizontal FOV of around 100 deg. my 15mm idea is comparable to or slightly wider than the Xpan's 30mm put for now I will stick with the C/Y 18mm. I have a used EVF for the M240 on the way to me.
Just thinking that this should have been posted in one of the gear related forums.

I can't figure out what you are wanting to do. If it is to arrive at compositions that can be cropped, or joined and cropped to give the desired panorama then isn't it easier to make viewing frames for the different focal lengths, then take one or multiple offset pictures for post-processing?

If it is to arrive at compositions that can be cropped, or joined and cropped to give the desired panorama then isn't it easier to make viewing frames for the different focal lengths, then take one or multiple offset pictures for post-processing? My imagination was captured by 1930's 'street' photography taken using a Kodak scanning lens camera. My first thought was to just buy a Horizon or earlier Horizont camera and shoot black and white film. The more I read about them the more I understood their limitation, focus at infinity with the DOF of a 28mm lens, light leaks and general lack of reliability but the 120 deg FOV is so attractive. I can not afford a Hasselblad Xpan or a Fuji 6x17, not that I would want to be carrying a Fuji617 as a snap shot camera or want to feed it 120 roll film.
Then I thought of what I have got that I can use, the C/Y 18mm lens from my Contax days gives me little or no distortion and Adobe ACR will sort the uneven illumination. My EOS 5D with 17-35 would give me the FOV but it is huge, my Leica M 240 with the C/Y Distagon is much smaller and can be used live view and gets me a 90 deg FOV. I can play with the Leica and Zeiss for nothing, well next to nothing as I have just bought an Olympus EVF which should be functionally identical to the Leica EVF for the M 240 and about a hundred quid cheaper. Just waiting to mug the postman and I can move on a bit, if it was just a flash in the pan I can use the EVF with my other Zeiss lenses on the M 240 so nothing lost.
So long story short I want to shoot with a very wide angle and crop to 13x36 ratio, I just need a way of seeing the crop in the viewfinder.
Shortlisted but rejected ideas include masking the viewfinder of an old Yashica FX2 and using the 18mm, that might yet come off the back burner.

OK - so I had it mostly right - you want to pre-visualise the scene as a crop. I just wondered it it were easier using a viewing frame. It would mean looking a bit odd, looking through a cardboard cut out instead of a camera, and you'd need to remember some reference points, but it might work.

UV filter and some black electrical tape? No filter thread on the C/Y 18mm Distagon! I did think about extending a petal lens hood but guess what, no lens hood either. Filter adapters and a lens hood were made for this lens 30 years ago and they do turn up used, mostly in the US and Japan but at a price I am not willing to pay, it would be almost cheaper to buy a 3D printer and make my own lens hood. That's a good excuse for toy shopping...

Yesterday evening Steph reminded me that we have this. Halina Panoramic IMG_8319sm by Keith Hudson, on Flickr The last time it was used was on a skiing holiday BC (before children) , it still works but lets face it does not have a lot go wrong. Time to get Hipster and down with D kids, a roll of Fuji Superia 400 has been loaded.

I always liked 2.75:1 anamorphic cinema films shot on 65 mm film that was used to make 70 mm prints for cinemas. I once saw a 70 mm print of Ben Hur made with this system. This an example of that ratio, cropped from a shot taken in 2008 at the long end of a Tamron 18-250 (because of this it's not the best technical quality).

Can you get Chinese/replica X-Pan accessory viewfinders from online auction sites etc.?
