Mr Kath brought home some cannoli and suggested I might try photographing them. I had the studio set up for food photography anyway (fish burgers/crab cakes etc) and figured I'd give it a go. After a couple of shots I decided that what it needed was a gentle dusting of icing sugar airily floating down from above to lightly enhance the pastries. 231104-cannoli disaster by Kath Polley, on Flickr

Yes.
I did clean it all up and start again, this time with just a teaspoon of icing sugar which I carefully carried over in the sieve with a piece of paper to catch any that fell through before I was ready. You know, rather than dumping a tablespoon into the sieve and forgetting it had holes in.

Looks like nuclear fallout! I thought of coke being sneezed at... I don't have the necessary experience to think that.

When I used to do food photography we used to give them a good spraying with hairspray to make them look freshly cooked and Mmmmm. Do you do that?

(I have in the past used a mix of water and glycerin, but these ones were just shot straight out of the air fryer.) 231103-Sheltie Seafish-Spicy Crabcake-Cut-002 by Kath Polley, on Flickr

Errr, no! (I have in the past used a mix of water and glycerin, but these ones were just shot straight out of the air fryer.) You sound horrified! We used hairspray as the items were often frozen and it made them looked freshly cooked. Didn't have the luxury of being able to cook them

I've had to do a few instructional videos showing how to cook foods so I've just got into the habit of actually cooking the food for the most part. My client this week has come back with a couple of alternative shots that they want, showing the insides of the food - I really think I'll have to cook them for that - not sure any amount of hairspray is going to make much difference. (Not that I have any hairspray. When your hair reaches down as long as mine does you'd need a whole can probably. Shoving it in a plait is better for the environment!)
